Helmet (or other safety gear) laws

Ok - before we hijack yet another RIP thread over why someone should or should not have been wearing or not wearing whatever, I figured I'd start yet another helmet thread.

So - with that out of the way - the question for discussion is:

Should riding a bike while not wearing a helmet be against the law? Why? Why not?

Before anyone gets on to the whole line of reasoning about medical care, forget it. Its a red herring. There are other methods to prevent paying for medical care for those who do not wish to wear safety equipment, and if that's your only reasoning, what you're basically saying is that since one illegal thing is being forced down everyone's throats, we should accept yet another illegal use of authority.

No argument - you SHOULD wear it.

The question is, should it be a law?

My condolences on the loss of your children.

NO!!! It should NOT be law. As an adult I should be allowed to make decisions that effect my well being, NOT the government. There is ZERO justification on why it should be law.

It should be the law, they make it a law to "At least try" and get you to wear a helmet cause your too ignorant to help yourself by putting one on.
How do you keep a from hurting himself? You MAKE him wear bubble wrap!! Same thing goes for MC riders and Helmets

Is there a reputable study about it is just personal opinion?

What about taxation?

Doesn't the US depend upon your taxes to fund e.g. the US Army protecting the US interests around the world making the USA the greater country in the world? You die, you don't pay taxes, the marines don't get stealth helicopters to get Osama...

Put your helmet if you support our troops

So you're saying the entire country is made up of retards and we need government to tell us what to do?

He ate bubble wrap. Do you really expect him to be able to formulate a logical response?

Here's an idea: stop using taxpayer's money to pick up the tab for deadbeats who don't pay their medical bills. Then there will be no claim of a financial benefit behind helmet laws!

Yes

People are stupid.

A helmet should be like a seat belt.... required to be on at all times.

I say that law should be kept out of what anyone wears. I wear a helmet, but let natural selection take it's course.

No no, not the whole country just a small portion. I mean, anything good for a person with an apparent lack of knowledge or understanding is fine by me. But with that said, its their choice to do so or not, even thought its the law, they can do what they wish. Just have to face the outcome

What kind of facts do you want? I have plenty of them.
1) I'm an adult
2) I have wrecked with and without helmets
3) I can make decisions for myself by myself
4) Our form of government was not set up to be a nanny state
5) I can walk and chew bubble gum at the same time

What more facts do you need in order to form an opinion on whether or not there should be a law requiring the use of a helmet to operate a motorcycle?
