stoplight rules

Q: I have heard that a motorcycle can go through a red light after stopping. If a motorcycle can do this, is it the same for a bicycle rider?

A: You are accurate that a motorcycle can proceed through a red light after certain conditions are met. The same is true for a person on a bicycle. The following are the conditions that must be followed before a motorcycle or bicyclist can go on a red light.

• The bicycle or motorcycle has been brought to a complete stop.

• The traffic-control signal continues to show a red light for an unreasonable time.

• The traffic-control signal is apparently malfunctioning or, if programmed or engineered to change to a green light only after detecting the approach of a motor vehicle, the signal has apparently failed to detect the arrival of the bicycle or motorcycle.

• No motor vehicle or person is approaching on the street or highway to be crossed or entered or is so far away from the intersection that it does not constitute an immediate hazard.

We will be seeing more motorcycles and bicyclist on the roads this summer with the higher gas prices and warmer weather. Remember that bicycles have the right to use the roads the same as other vehicles with the exceptions of interstates. They are also required to follow the traffic laws the same as motor vehicles. That means stopping at stop signs, signaling turns, and riding on the same side of the road and direction as other vehicles.
