ZX-7R refresh

I have had this 96 ZX-7R for a long time. Sat in storage 6yrs. Bike has needed new fairings for sometime. They werent too bad. Some pieces had small cracks and one side had been replaced with a fiberglass piece before I got the bike.

Bike mods when I bought it:
D&D full exhaust
Factory pro IGN advance
Dyno Jet Kit (didnt know the bike had this till tore the carbs apart)

When I put the bike up , I thought I had ran it out of gas first but seems I didnt get it all out.

So I pulled the tank, carbs, and fairings. Carbs were pretty bad. Alot of stripped out screws replaced with wood screws on the bowls.

Ordered a set of carbs that were supposed to be NOS. Once i got them turns out they were just a set of carbs that had a DynoJet kit as well and apparently they didnt actually know how to get them setup. All the sync screws were bottomed out.

But never the less they are in much better shape then mine. The pic shows the carb parts from both sets. The brown parts are from my original carbs.

Been waiting 2 weeks for my rebuild kits. They were not shipped till yesterday.

Ordered a New fiberglass fairing kit for the bike. Got those mid week. Will likely go White/Kawi green. Got the florescent green windscreen going with it.

While waiting for the parts. I changed the oil(twice now) due to both sets of carbs dumping fuel. Adjusted the valves and got everything cleaned up. Decided to pull my wheels put on the new tires and paint them . Got my front wheel off, pulled the tire, stripped the paint and found the wheels were chrome at one time, just 70% of it was gone and they just painted over them. While doing this I found the front wheel has to many little bends in the outer lip.

I found wheels, forks, swing arm and tail frame on Craigs for $200. Came off an 03 ZX7R with 1300 miles. So all this is going on my bike.

Newer forks are on,

Gas tank has been stripped , primed and dings fixed.

Using an 09 R6 silencer for exhaust with a small cat/muffler. Got to shorten my 4/2/1 before I fit it...

As I progress, I will update.

I will tune in.

I have a '95 7R that is in very nice shape. I really should get it out and get it running. It sits covered in the corner.

Thanks everyone.

I might freshen up the 749cc and bore it out.

But the 9R engine fits in the bike nicely. I may just wait and do that swap later on. Maybe at then end of the year.

get the forks done with andy at metric. crazy good race tech suspension put into a already good fork from the get go= confidence inspiring handling. go to www.oppracing.com to get a little carbon for it also. especially the ram air ducts. it's a worth a few hp.

Thanks everyone..

The frame is polished and so is the swing arm. But i am leaving the new swing arm and tail frame painted. So the main frame, wheel lips and peg brackets will be the only polished parts.

I have been told that changing or modifying the ram air ducts are worth no power increase. I really contemplated removing the water traps and such. Mainly just for weight reduction. The whole 1#..

I am still contemplating buying a 1995 9R engine. Found one for $300 running with 11k miles. I keep talking myself out of it. LOL

Carb kits will be here Friday, and so will my high flow cat and baffle/muffler. Using the R6 silencer on the end. This week I will be shortening my header were it goes from 2-1.

ALWAYS loved this bike. Was going to get one when I bought my 6R but didn't for some reason (weight and saddle hight where the main reasons) I love my bike but in hindsight I still sometimes wish I had chosen the 7.

I was going to get another 9R but I like the look and ride of a zx7.

I mounted the new tires on the wheels today. Still got to wetsand and polish the lips out..

Taking the header saturday to be shortened, have the muffler/baffle and cat welded in as well. Then I will mount the R6 silencer on it.

Just dyeing to get my carbs reassembled and the bike running again.

saw a ZX7R on CL today for 1K...something about no title and motor won't crank over. If you're looking for a parts bike it might be worth looking into.

SO this build kinda went a different direction. This build is now a double feature.

Bought that other ZX7R off of craigslist. Its a 1996 like mine. (ITS For a friend) Poor bike is in really really bad shape. Saved it from being a parts bike. It will be getting rebuilt the same time as mine.

My bike:

Well we started pulling the good running engine, cause its getting a big bore ZX9R engine from a 1995 bike. I already bought the motor. Gonna start fitting it sometime this week.

Bike we just bought for friend:

Has a bad engine, no fairings, bent fork, bent wheel and dented gas tank.. Plus many more little problems and missing parts.. Thanks to all the scavengers that are too lazy to order replacement parts that only cost a few dollars.

So its getting my old engine (not before we freshen it up). he is ordering new fairings, and I have extra forks.
