Is this one of the greatest Moto GP races ever?

I think so.

Is this the one where Rossi passed in the dirt (illegally) in the corkscrew?

and then nearly runs Stoner off, yeah, that's it. This was back when Rossi still had at least a little class, now he rides like an anxious eight year old.

There's gotta be a better race that involved close racing, but didn't have the illegal overtaking manauvers.

People will always have different opinions of that manuvere but you have to take it for what it is: one of the greatest passes in recent memory on one of the most famous turns in the world by the greatest rider of this generation against one of his fiercest rivals who was not only the raining champ but the man he was battling with all season for the championship.

Making an illegal pass in the dirt is considered one of the greatest passes in recent history?

Doesn't speak highly for the sport, does it?

Did the race directors determine that the pass was illegal or is that your opinion?

True, but there isn't a whole lot to choose from now days. As much as I love motogp a lot of the races get pretty boring after the first third. The aliens ride off in the distance and the coverage of mid and back pack (where most of the passing is done) is a joke. All the drama on the paddock is almost more exciting and what people talk more about than the actual race itself. For exciting racing, moto2 and world sbk clearly edges motogp currently. So when we're treated to something like this I think it really becomes memorable.

Rossi won aboard an underpowered/inferior bike, showing that electronics ultimately won't defeat the rider. Stoner had GPS assisted traction control (not designed to withstand the constant changes in speed, throttle position, braking Rossi subjected him to).

When asked, two of the best riders from the past, Schwantz and Doohan both said "that race was the ultimate show of pure technique".

Illegal pass? I didn't see him get black flagged or called to pass through pit lane.

Caught? Was he stealing something or what??

You're right it was easy for him to get away with the "ILLEGAL" pass with 50,000 cameras on him.
