Visor/sheild shatter?

Is it normal for a sheild to break in an accident? I kinda assumed it was some type of unobtainium plastic that might pop off the helmet, but not actually break.

Difference between manufacturers? Is there a "race" sheild that won't break?

I ask cause this is RJV's sheild from his wreck sunday. It split into 3 peices and one of them sliced his cheek open... luckily it didn't get his eye. It was the photochromatic / shade shifter / transitions lense / UV activated smoke visor from Bell.

Ive been down on my R6 wearing and HJC where I was trying to be a gymnast and the visor just came off the helmet, and another time I was riding with my Arai and a big piece of rubber flew up from a truck and it just bonced off with nothing but a scuff mark. So like was stated before Id be calling bell.

....brand new, or how old is the visor.

What's been used to clean it, or how/where has it been stored?

Not looking for actual answers, but pointing out factors that can affect him.

My GUESS is due to solfx transtions. I sell transtions optical lenses and all the ones that are made with a film built in are horrible and usually split around the edges. let us know what you find out that was going to be my next lid and visor.

Please do. Thinking about getting another Bell Star and maybe another transition shield. Curious to what they have to say.

Most if not all faceshields on modern helmets are made from polycarbonate (lexan) which should NOT break like that.
A loong time ago they were made from plexiglass which WOULD break that way and that's the reason they don't use it anymore.
Defintely call Bell and see what they say. Be respectful but firm and don't expect them to give you anything. That will get you further than calling and raising . IMHO

I would highly recomend bell helmets from my expirence.

I dont plan on raising any with bell. Just want them to know is case there a problem with the shields. Everyones safety is more important than getting anything bell would throw my way. unless they want to buy a new bike

talked to the bell rep today.told him the story of the crash and the shield cracking. he sounded suprised. he wanted to make sure I sent the shield to him so he could have an analysis done on it by his plastics department. I let him know i wasn't looking for free replacements. I was more worried about product quality and someone not loosing an eye. at the end of the conversation he told me to email him the model, size and color of any bell helmet and he would send me one free of charge. win for me!!

as for the analysis of the shield I will let yall know when he lets me know.
