I am surprised no one here has had a running with the kitchen sink.

had to avoid a parking block in the middle of the lane on the merging of beltway to 290 west. scary because I didn't see it until I was half way into the turn way the up there. apparently the city workers lost one and didn't realize it. this was like a year ago.
almost every week I have to dodge stuff flying out from people trucks. cardboard boxes tend to be the favorite.

I was almost off the lane anyway but the cars ahead of me just start slamming brakes and I just got on the shoulder and was keeping an eye behind me on the mirrors as I was slowing watching for anyone jumping out in front of me.

I was getting ready to just stop the bike by the wall if I had to and jump into the opposite shoulder.

Thats when I see the couch. A few cars are already pulled off to the right, they either hit it or hit another car. What a cluster that was.

SO, to what degree is the person that lost the couch accountable for anything that happens because of their couch on the road?

Pretty sure they are not liable for cars hitting each other but they have to legally be accountable for something.
Welcome to freeway riding

to answer to OP's question. it is called failure to secure load. the owner is responsible for whatever damage it causes. this includes big stuff and also includes rock and flying off a trailer and chipping windshields.

I have seen a lady loose a brand new refridgerator in the middle of I-10 here in Beaumont. It was in the middle of 4 lanes of traffic, she was pulled over on the shoulder on her cell phone crying with that cheap twine rope people use to tie down furniture and stuff hanging off the tailgate. I'm sure she was on the phone with her hubby who was uber stoked.

I'm not sure how it is for everyone but I know with my fathers trucking company if one of his trucks loses its load on the freeway and causes a wreck the whole company can be held liable for it.

Also since I live in Angleton I spend most of my time dodging hogs who wander onto the highway.

SO do you know if they are responsible for the direct accident, meaning that only if they hit their load or cars get pushed off the road cause the load landed in their lane?

How about other accidents occurring because of this? What if a driver dodges the obstruction and hits another car, or cars slamming the breaks no to hit it and get slammed by someone else?

Had a run-in with something like this on a roadway a couple months back, luckily in the cage... didn't see who's vehicle it fell off of though, so not only were they not held accountable, but because we couldn't dodge it and no other vehicles were involved it, so driver that hit the object gets it filed as an at fault accident to haunt their driving record.

I agree. The sad truth is that most of this is caused by carless illegals. I have a truck and I know when there is a load in the back, it is always secured tightly, I never have to worry about any load at 80 mph, and I've hauled some weird oddball stuff, like 2 old school arcade games that have to stand up. (those things are heavy...and top heavy..add wind... it can get hairy lol)

No idea. I think it would probably come down to an investigation.

I almost hit a concrete mixer on 45 near sawdust a few weeks back.

Was a very very very close call. Came down to literally a foot away to being a nasty accident.
