I think you are an idiot. I just want you to know this.

If he is a friend try to guide him in the ways to be safe. Starting on a 1k is stupid, really really stupid.

Unless you are quite fat or are scared of wrestling the bike/wringing out the throttle, a 250 is fine on the freeway. If anything, it teaches you more about how a bike handles and almost over prepares you for a bigger since they are easier to ride at freeway speeds.

Tell your acquaintance to go find a kids dirt bike and ride the out of it in a field. That's the best experience anyone can get.

The experience lets us judge. anyone with common sense knows that a 1k is a stupid first bike. Seriously what are you 18? Do us a favor go sit down at the little kids table till the grownups are done talking.

How so?

I got a 600 and it's great, haven't been able to top it's full potential yet...even after 3 track days.

250s are perfectly fine and are very good cornering machines, ask Switch or Caligonetx...

Nothing wrong with starting on something small and then moving up once you grasp the concept of handling a bike... Much more room for error on a smaller bike than a 1000... Not much twist of the wrist to get a 1000 moving, FAST

Perhaps then you should stfu and listen before mouthing off about people 'talking '. It's not about what someone 'rides', this is about what someone learns to ride on, as their first set of street wheels...and surviving.

Pop your head out of your , search these forums and you'll find out, in part, WHY I currently have an 05 FZ1 and not an 04 FZ6. Here's another hint though... it was one of a deal.

says statistics... we are trying to police our own here. 1. we are trying to save lives. 2. we are trying to prevent a situation like europe has with the tiered license system. you are an immature, in-experienced rider. come back in 5 years when you are around the scene long enough to see the carnage.

My opinion is a 1000cc is too big for most beginners. Ive been asked a lot lately by friends who want to start riding with me what size bike to get and I usually recommend something between 200-750cc.

Even so it mostly comes down to the rider. If you are really concerned for him take him riding, evaluate his skills and help him to be a better rider. Hound him about it if you have to. You can't make him ride something smaller, but you can help him be safe.

that's all you can really do. liter+ bikes are un-forgiving. self control is only a small part of the issue. the big issue is mistakes. mistakes happen, and depending on when that mistake happens and what kind of power that machine puts down can make the difference between living and dieing.
