Motard people, how far do you ride?

Got everything I need to make my wr450f street legal, but was wondering if there is a limit to how long I can ride it at hwy speeds at one time? I want to ride it to work and school " work - pearland to bush airport" but I was told by another motard rider that the 45min ride at hwy speeds is to much for a 450. Just curious if it really is or if there something I can change to make the engine capable of commuting long distances on the hwy. Just curious cause people ride them at the track and that seems like it would be harder on the motor than cruising on the hwy.

As long as it's geared right and you're not laying on the rev limiter, it'll handle it for a good bit as long as you keep it cool. You'll have to add a fan because you'll definetly end up hitting traffic sooner or later.
I think after that first trip though, you won't want to do it again.
Those seats are brutal and a lightweight tard just isn't much fun on the straights.

I got a drz400sm and use it as my commuter. I ride from downtown to Ellington Field which is 25miles each way. I can cruise at 75ish with no issues....it's a lil tough with a headwind though.

I ride about 50 miles a day on a 250 motard. It's mostly highway. I need a bigger counter sprocket

Rode my old KTM 625SMC from Denton to Austin, and back for a weekend.

Prolly wouldn't do it again! a 6th gear would have been nice...

I think he's more concerned about his bike surviving, rather than his posterior.
He has a converted dirt bike, not a factory motard that was designed to handle street riding.

I imagine it would be tough on the top end. Maybe not bad for a ride now and then.

I was told that my CRF450's top end is suppose to be done every 25 hrs or something. I'm guessing the wr450 is about the same.

At the track, you ride maybe 2hr 20mins per trackday so you would just have to rebuild each offseason if you did about 12 trackdays a year.

On the street, I could easily put 25 hrs on my bike in less than a month.

I wouldn't do it. If you rode it for an hour and a half everyday you'd be spending a lot of time maintaining it every month. Plus they are pretty miserable to ride on the freeways. The motor is revved out and the front end is flighty because the bike is so light. Some of the heavier factory motards aren't bad but a converted dirt bike would be pretty uncomfortable.

I have a converted WR426 and I've ridden it to work (90 miles r/t) and school (100 miles r/t) a few times. The trip is almost all highway and really isn't that much fun on the tard. I've changed the gearing so the motor is a bit happier at highway speeds. I don't have any problems with the front end and the lightweight isn't an issue, but the the seat is so uncomfortable. Plus with the short maintenance intervals I don't want to put boring miles on it. I also have a DR650 and I love commuting on it. I think something like the DR would be much better for you if you want to commute daily.

Sustained high rpms kill the top end. Either re-gear (which may kill fun factor) or get another bike for commuting.

Bike(s):
- The bike I own
- All the bikes I used to own which I still list so everyone on the forums will know how cool I am

Longest I've traveled on mine in a day was just shy of 400 miles, backroads to Austin, then to college station, and back.

I don't ride a converted tard though, so that information is basically useless to you.
