how can I run a Vin on a bike?

Looking to run a vin number on a bike I am purchasing tonight. Is there a carfax for a bike that is reliable? I did a search and lots of places popped up online but not sure how reliable they are. Can someone who has an account run it for me? or Point me in the right direction. Thanks

Post up the VIN, I'm sure there will be someone along to help you out.
Another smart thing to do is to take it to a reputable moto shop and let someone with some bike knowledge look at it.

Not all accidents are filed or claimed. Joe-Schmoe could have wrecked the bike and had some of his buddies do a half fix to sell it off.

Call or Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited or PM him here on the board.

Is the vin. I looked the bike over pretty good yesterday. Looked like it had been dropped sitting still. Some small rash on the plastic and on the front brake. But nothing major. The frame looked good. I checked to make sure it was not tweeked. It looked straight. I took it for a test drive and it rode straight and felt smooth on the power. I just want to make sure the bike is legit as far as title goes. Definetly do not want to get scammed. This bike is for my wife. It's a Honda F4i.

Walk away or be prepared for a pain in the .

If the current owner has the title in hand, AND it wasn't signed by the previous owner, you are OK

Otherwise.. I went thru this on the wifes 636 and it was a hassle.

I hope the seller does have the title. If not walk. Triple check that the vin on the title matches the bike.

Just talked to him on the phone. He said he has the title. He bought it 2 months ago. For a second bike. He did not like it after the purchase too small for him. He has a busa. Never registered it. Said he would meet me at the DMV if that made me more confortable and do the paperwork there. He said he has all the paperwork from the guy who sold it to him. And he has the clear title. What do you guys think? Thanks for all the advice by the way..

Sounds like he is up front. But if he has his name on the title, you'll have to get the original owner to file for a duplicate. Not a complete pain if the original owner doesn't mind...

As long as the title is blank on the back, you "should' be fine.

even if its signed as long as its not dated, then you wont get hit w/ the penalty for not registering w/i 20 days of purchase. if he is willing to go with you to the dmv i would suggest having it titled in his name then immediately titling in yours. even so, if its in the original persons name and the guy your buying from goes with you, that does no good, b/c he is not be in the 'chain of title' if that makes sense.

If the VIN is clear, don't let "not having a title," dissuade you from your purchase.

It will require some paperwork, but you can get a new title in your name, provided you have some signatures.

This link should get you started.

Thanks everyone for the info. I purchased the bike this past monday. Went to the courthouse on Wed and handled all the title work. Everything turned out good. Thanks for all the good info. Made me feel a whole lot better about the purchase and my Wife is a happy camper now that she has her own ride.
