I can always just ask for pointers from you "senior" guys on our next ride.
I think you are plenty confident, knowledgeable, and smart to ride safely on the street. You've come with us on multiple rides and always keep space, ride smart, and keep your eyes out for others.

I think what texlurch is trying to do is get people who really lack confidence in the corners up to speed enough that they feel comfortable on the street alone, around other vehicles, and riding in groups.

What you need is a track day, IMHO.

Wouldn't have anything to do with you having 10+ years experience, multiple bikes owned and track day experience would it???

In another post someone was saying they are giving up their place in L1 (Novice Rider) group for Ride Smart at MSRH this weekend. You might be able to get it from him at a discount. I think he was looking at selling it. Give it a look.

Wish I could go, but those track days take up lots of time, time which unfortunetly I do not have much of...

It is a solid day. You are right about that. But, once you go you'll thank yourself.

For instance, this Saturday I was asked to attend a big PR event for the new Camaro Convertible.

"Sorry, I'm going to the track."

People understand.

vegas_kid, I appreciate your honesty.. but since you feel like you would benefit, I'll leave you on there.. the list almost always changes prior to the ride anyhow.

Keep that humble opinion of yourself, and ignore that green demon on group rides, and you'll be around a good long time.

I've had a few questions so here is a basic overview of the last ride and plan

We'll start out in the parking lot going over the basics of proper body position on the bike, control locations to suit the rider, the importance of suspension adjustment
We'll address the difference in street riding versus track and why you don't need to hang off on the street (unless you're a fat old man on a heavy bike )
We'll skim over the proper lines for corners; since this is Toddler Twisties and slow speeds you don't need to worry about that yet, lets fix the basics
Where to look and how
Braking zones, safety zones on the road, maintenance throttle
RELAX on the bike
Countersteering, how and why
Basic group riding rules, hand signals, staggering

At no point will we go faster than the slowest person is comfortable riding, at each stop I'll be checking and asking the helpers for any "tell tails" that someone is over his/her head

We start out on the highway to get to the roads, staggered.
This is a good time to work on RELAXING on the bike and playing with countersteering inputs in your lane

First stretch of road has low speed corners
We go single file at all times on the twisties, 2 sec between riders minimum
We approach at or below the road speed limit
Lightly brake down to the recommended yellow warning speed or less
Exaggerate your head and body position to get used to it
countersteer into the turns
smoothly accellerate back up to posted speed
repeat

We are staggered with leader-noob-helper-noob-helper etc. This way each noob only has to watch the helper ahead, and each helper only has to watch the noob ahead

At each stop we take a break and review the stretch we just did, making sure everyone is still in the RELAX mode

Next stretch is a little faster, but we are still using the yellow warning speed for our entrys, working on getting our heads into the turns, smooth on the gas, back to the posted speed of 55

The next stretch has smooth pavement and good s-bends of 40 to 45 yellow entry speeds. We do the same thing, then turn around and try to raise our entry to 55 which is the posted road speed. If everyone is good to go we reverse again, and try to step it up just a tic more

I'll also demonstrate that you don't need both hands on the bars in the corners

The next couple stretches again are a little higher speed and we work up as long as everyone is comfortable and RELAXED

At the end is a good BBQ lunch, we talk about what we did or didn't like, why Trackdays and ERC training is a great thing to do, and pass out CD copies...

With a little luck some of the folks on the last ride will chime in with their thoughts.. we had a lot of excellent discussions going on at every stop, and everyone said they had a good time and learned or remembered something. I hope they all continued to practice and learn and get better in the past 3 years...

Tex,

Do you mind if the wife and I just tag along for the ride? I bought a new BMW and she just upgraded to my GSXR. We both know how to ride, just new bikes. We can hang back at the end of the pack.

Texlurch, I'm in as a noob if there is room. If not, put me on the waiting list in case someone cancels.

Let me know.
Thanks.

Let me see how it goes. As it is, if all the noobs show, we'll have 21 in the group. It gets a bit tough to manage and make sure everyone is on the same page if the group gets any larger....
