May 29 Sunday, Total Noob to Curvy Roads Ride

Back by popular demand...

*** Please don't post if you aren't interested in going on this ride, thanks!

9:30 am, bright and early....

We will start our group discussions at 9:30, so please be there on time...!!!!!

Crappy weather will cancel this....

Basic route is about 80-90 miles, lunch will be at the Waller County Line BBQ at 362 and 290. Ride ends there.

Meet at the Starbucks on Fry Rd and Park Ln (thanks to Newrider for the map )

Please arrive with a full tank.
Check your air pressure, chain and overall condition of the bike before you roll out
Wear your gear!
Make sure you and your bike are legal, please...

You can check out the last one we did here:

http://www.motohouston.com/forums/sh...ight=noob+ride

Basic guidelines for the ride:

Slow, learn to walk before you run
We will be at/or below the posted speed limits for the trip
MSF is a big plus for the basic knowledge
We'll work on basic cornering techniques and raise your personal comfort levels up a notch
Same number of experienced riders as noobs, so we are alternating and everyone has a chance to follow someone else.. this way the noobs aren't trying to look all the way up front at the leaders, and the helpers can offer hints and tips based on direct observations....

At no time will anyone be pressured to go any faster than he/she is comfortable doing... we crawl, walk then run... toddlers on the curves are welcome...

This is specifically aimed at YOU, if:

You are new to backroads
New to sportbikes in general
uncomfortable whenever the road bends

This is not a trackday; this is a few friends getting together to shoot the and pass on some general knowledge and riding basics.

We'll touch on topics such as:

bike setup
looking where you want to go
good body position for the street
how to turn the bike
throttle control
setting up the curve
street lines versus race lines
group riding basics
why track days and advanced rider courses are kewl
and whatever else we can come up with

Please sign up only if you can commit to a half day on Sunday.. and note whether you are a noob or helper..

Just like last time we have a limit of 10 total noobs and helpers, to keep it small and simple. First come, first served and extras will be alternates.

Any questions you don't want to post feel free to PM me....

If you are looking to make this ride, but do not have ALL the appropriate gear to be able to attend, Please send me a PM as i have a some spare gear here and there, we can check to see if sizes fit well, maybe meet up the day prior or maybe an hour or two before the ride, to get you all the gear to make sure your properly protected.

Just send me a PM of what you are missing and the size you wear.

This will be a free rental from me personally. Just so you can make the ride and get the experience. If my gear is not returned to me by the end of the ride. i won't be doing this again.

Ooo me, me.. I'm terrible with body positioning & lines.. I ride a standard but have been riding with the sports peeps in the last 2 weeks, it's been fun- I can keep pace but I've found I don't really know what the I'm doing in the turns lol.

I'll get the wife to meet us over there and bring my rear stand, so we can have a demo bike.

If i had to pass on some knowledge that i know, this would be it. The pace will not be of this level, these are just some riding tips i picked up throughout the years. Not something to go out and try on the ride, Just keep a mental note of what to set a goal for in the future.

General
Load your legs and your feet... In other words your upper body, arms, hands, wrists should carry none of your weight... Your weight should be supported by your lower body with your legs, back, and abs holding your upper body up.

Cornering
Look through the turn as much as possible... turn your head!
Do not fight the lean, work your body with it... You want to keep your spine parallel with the centerline of the bike... in other words, don't cross up your body with your upper body over the top of the bike, with your hanging off.
Speaking of leaning off the bike... Put your head towards the inside mirror ("kiss the mirror")... Slide your off the seat towards the inside and clamp down on the tank/frame with your outside leg... Keep your feet positioned so that you are on the of your feet (the area right behind your toes), heals in, toes pointing out (think \ /)... Keep your 2nd toe from the outside positioned so, if barefoot, you could hold on to the outside of the peg with that toe... Now lean, and stick out your inside knee...

yup, the basics.. plus we'll address adjusting the controls to fit the rider, and street versus track techniques...

One thing you do on the track is look as far thru the turn as you can, but that isn't always an option on the street..

Another thing to learn for the street, whether car or bike, is scanning or the fighter pilots eyes..

All you designated helpers please make notes and put down any thoughts or ideas and we'll get together via PM in a week or two and compare. Prefer not to clutter up the ride thread too much...

Please.. everyone keep in mind this is not a track day or school. This is aimed specifically at street riding, even tho good basics and foundation will carry over to all your riding...

thanks!

No worries. This is a building blocks ride and we do it step by step.

Not a bad idea to read up or watch any riding videos prior.. training and practice are the only way to get better at anything.
