whats the site where you can plug in your VIN and find the tax on your vehicle? its a state wide tax so it should be the same regaurdless of what county you are in.
You're Texans, so walk proud. Spoken like a true democrat, wants everyone else to foot the bill. You going to drill you own oil well and refine your own gas, because you'll have to pay tax on that too

Bike(s):
lots of bikes from 80cc to 1200cc
Current : ZX11
KX80

just pay the TTL. if you were that worried about it why the did you buy a bike worth 10K..

it will cost you ~$540 to register it even if you did pay less.

Computation of Motor Vehicle Sales Tax

The price you paid or consideration given for the vehicle
The agreed value of the trade in vehicle (if any)
Taxable value equals Purchase Price less any Trade In
Sales Tax is 6.25% of 80% of the SPV (Standard Presumptive Value) or sales price, whichever is greater
Amount of tax paid to another STATE (local taxes included are not considered for credit purposes) (include a copy of your PAID Tax Receipt IN YOUR NAME for this amount)
The Amount you owe is the difference between the amount in #4 and the amount of STATE ONLY tax previously paid in another state. If this figure is -0- (ZERO) or less you owe no tax
If this vehicle was a gift, the GIFT TAX is $ 10.00. Please check the appropriate box in space #21.

If you traded even, one vehicle for another and NO MONEY OR OTHER CONSIDERATION was exchanged, your EVEN TRADE TAX is $ 5.00. Please check the appropriate box in space #21. You must also complete space #20 of the Title Application (Form 130-U) if you are claiming an even trade.

Your Total Fees Will Be:

Title Fee $ 28.00
Registration Fee As determined Above
Local Fee $ 11.50
Motor Vehicle Sales Tax As determined Above

standard presumptive value. tax office inserts your vin into the computer and it spits out a value. you pay tax on that (not sure what they'd do if you wrote in a value greater than the value, so i'd just write something really low on the form to be safe).

i thought you could get a certified appraisal, but thats just more time and money.

Even if you buy a wrecked POS bike that won't run...you still pay taxes on blue book value no matter what. I even asked if I could get an appraisal and she said, "maybe...but we'll have to submit it for approval...blah...blah."
No more "gifts" anymore.

Doesn't matter if I give you a bare frame with a title. When you go to transfer that title you will pay taxes on BB value.

Sounds like im screwed on the state out of my money. damnit.

what year wide glide you have? mine just developed a small hiccup on the bottom end in the past week or so. in not impressed with the with fi system on the bike a bit. its inconsistent and the throttle response is . the bike never runs the same 2 days in a row.

Well, if you really want to avoid the taxes you can just keep going and getting cheap, temporary, paper tags every month. For me, though, it's worth just about anything just not to have to stand in line at the county annex any more often than I have to.

Since original question already answered fully I would like to continue on with this slight hijack.

Why does Texas collect sales tax everytime the vehicle changes ownership? Is there a legitimate reason for it or is it just a way to collect needed state revenue?
However we can't complain too much as we have no state income tax when almost all other states do. Look at an older classic car that has been resold many times. State could easily have collected more sales tax on it than the original purchase price.

- Some states have no sales tax at all for vehicles.
- Others tax only on the first sale (with some at higher rates though ~9%).
- Others tax every sale but give you credit for your trade in.
- Others tax every sale but let you declare your own price (like TX five years ago).
I don't know of another state that forces minimum values like TX and at every ownership change.

But as I said no state income tax here so small price to pay I guess.

If feel bad about getting screwed on paying TTL, imagine paying the state money to get your deceased fiance's name off a motorcycle because you were "defrauding" the state by keeping it on there. I wasn't defrauding, I was mourning. That being said, I am used to getting screwed, I served in the Air Force, lol
