Buying a new bike

I'm interested in purchasing a brand new bike and went to the triumph dealer to get buyers quote and they tacked on about 800 dollars worth of freight plus PDI. What is your guys experience in negotiating these off or any recommendation of other triumph dealers that are lenient about these charges. I'm willing to ride the distance to Austin if I have to. The bike by the way is the 2011 TIger 800xc

Thanks!

PDI - Preparation & Delivery Inspection

If its on the floor its obviously already inspected and prepped, they just want you to pay for it. They attach it to freight to make it seem more justifiable. Either way its a flexible haggling point for them, i wouldn't bother buying if they weren't open to adjust things for me.

are you paying cash or financing it? that gives some leverage. If the MSRP is your out the door price then you generally came out decent, dealer fees are expected - gotta keep the lights on.

I would search on the internet first. Talk with sales managers through e-mail before wasting your time at the dealership if it's not close by. Or by phone.

Just be simple, tell them you are really interested in buying the bike, but you need them to help you out to meet at a middle figure.

I agree with what he said, if they aren't open to negotiating that PDI price, then I wouldn't even do business with them. They are at YOUR service, not the other way around.

Might want to check the classified ads to see if somebody is selling one a year or two old. Probably save a load of money.

If you want brand new, just tell them you want an out the door price and negotiate with that. Don't get caught up in the fees, just worry about the final price.

Just ask them to send you the invoice of the bike, and then ask for that price out the door.

Not to mention trying to have them eat the TT&L

Really? Cuz I did that in December when I bought my 2011 Subaru STI. They didn't laugh at me, they actually sold it to me for that price after 1 week of the go-around.

The Motorcycle business is nowhere near the Auto industry in regards to margins, factory assistance, or rebates....

That may be true, doesn't change the fact that if a dealer wasn't willing to help a potential customer in any way to make it an easier buy, then I would say them.

If you paid invoice price and no TT&L then the manufacturer was offering dealer incentives (kick backs). The dealer still made money off of you. They didn't give the car away. Either that or they took you to the cleaners in the finance office

Freight and set up can be charged for but like all other items negotiable.
$800 sounds very high. in fact it sounds like more than double.

It doesn't hurt to call other dealers.

I typically ask for a service manual too.

I kind of wonder if the isues in Japan will give Triumph and Harley a boost.
