I hate to say like this because I know we all get complacent sometimes, and I obviously can't say for sure it would have worked out any different had I been in his shoes, but he could have completely avoided being hit if he would have just kept an eye in his mirrors.

also is it just me or does it look like he locked up his rear wheel trying to make the stop?

Mr. F - If you notice - the traffic came to a sudden stop... the rider was probably trying to hit the guy INFRONT of him.... yes - you look behind you to ensure no one is getting close - but you also gotta keep a check up front so you dont hit anyone else....

That brings back bad memories of my incident. Good thing the guy lived. Hecould have easily got run over, too.

Thumbs up to the aware drivers that avoided him.

I can definitely agree with you there, which is why I said I can't be sure that it would have worked out any different had I been in his shoes, but this will also vary from rider to rider. It looked like a panic stop, most of the time a panic stop will leave you little time to look anywhere but directly ahead, locking up the rear wheel certainly doesn't help. Looks like a combination of panic and inexperience to me. Those afterthoughts don't really matter in this particular case, glad the rider made it out alive and can still walk, talk and if he really wanted to, jump on a bike again. Not many riders get that lucky.

Rear tire smoked twice, homeboy on the bike almost rear rended the person infront of him too! Hope he had health insurance.

eeek! It's impossible to really say "I would have done...etc" but situations like that are why I try to ride near a shoulder. I've heard that screeach of a car trying not to hit me a few times, nothing scarier.

thats sucks.

he could have lane split to get more room,

mirrors help in an instant to see whats behind when coming to a fast stop.
plus he probably "freaked"
as you can see the back tire smoke.. but he let off and then back again smoke.

if he would have swerved out of the lane, that would have been the best. pass the cars on the side.

at least thats what I do/did
