Advanced First Responder Class

I've been in contact with a guy in Galena Park that teaches pretty much everything EMS related. My original idea was for a BTLS class for our members instead of CPR only. The instructor suggested an Advanced First Responder course. It is cheaper, covers medical and traumatic emergencies, and those that successfully complete the course will receive a CPR/AED card in addition to the Advanced First Responder certification.

It's a 1 day course, cost is $60 per person. Minimum of 8 people required for a class to make.

Below is my idea I posted in the original COR/First Aid thread for the BTLS class. It could still work for this.

You can get this certification without any other prior or current certification (EMT, CPR, first responder, etc.). I am awaiting a response for rates, minimum class size and possible class dates.

This class will be significantly more expensive than a first responder/CPR class. Probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 per person, and it will last 2 days. I know this is more than most people would want to spend, so I have formulated an idea. When I receive the reply for rates and minimum class size, I say we start first by filling the minimum with seasoned riders who attend group rides most frequently and those with some form of prior medical training, including military. After the minimum is filled, we get as many people as possible to chip in and cover the cost. Let's say the minimum number is 10, and it's $200 per person. If we can get 60 people to chip in, including those on the list, it will come to about $35/person. Small price to pay for having someone trained to keep your a$$ alive until and EMS unit shows up to cart you off to the hospital.

It's just a thought to mull over while I'm waiting for a response from the instructor. Names that come to mind are:

1. Bevo (seasoned/frequency)
2. Senator (seasoned/frequency/current medical)
3. NewRider (frequency)
4. Grimace (prior military medical)
5. Davekg (prior military medical)
6. Sunday Rider (seasoned/frequency)
7. Floyd600 (seems to have his shyt together)

Feel free to recommend others. I'm exhausted. Tired of thinking for the night.

I'm actually really interested in something like this. Didn't see the original thread for this but what is required to take the course?

Money, time & at least 8 people showing up to the class. No previous experience or certification required. I'm waiting to hear back from the instructor about potential class dates.

Did you guys know that there's a course designed specifically for motorcyclists?

http://www.accidentscene.net/

Denise Carey lives in Houston and can probably set one up for you.

We could probably host it at the classroom if that's convenient for everyone.

Interesting. Do you know if students get CPR and AED cards upon completion?

Now that I'm home, here's the curriculum for the Advanced First Responder class. The under the influence/psych may not seem practical on the surface, but intoxication/psych symptoms can be similar to those found in head trauma. If you were to see these signs after a wreck, you should think head trauma first and treat accordingly....then consider possible intoxication/psych.

Adult Patient Assessment (Trauma/Medical)

Vital Signs

Bleeding Control; Splinting; Burns

Stroke, MI, Diabetic Emergencies

Adult CPR

Basic Airway Management; Bloodborne Pathogens

AED; Documentation

Moving Patient; C-Spine Immobilization

Under the Influence; Psych

I just received an email from the instructor stating that weekends would be best for the class since he does not have an Advanced First Responder class scheduled for this year and will have to squeeze it in with the other classes already scheduled.

I have not yet heard from anyone (except Grimace) on my original list of recommended candidates. I am leaving myself off the list because I am an active paramedic and hold BTLS certification, among others. When the list reaches at least 8 people that are 100% sure they will take the class, we can find a date you all have off and I'll set it up.

So far, the list looks like this:

1. Grimace
2. Bluewave18
3. Charliebrown
4. delock
5. babymilo36 (interested, but not definite)
6. Hail
