Actually that's not completely true. You can request your 3 digit number of choice, (2 if it's an endurance bike) and the CMRA will let you know if it's available.

You get your license throught Lone Star Track days, that's where you'll take your school and run in a "mock race"
After that you are eligible to race in as many events your bike qualifies for and that you have enough money to enter.

At CycleGear they sell numbers. They come three to a pack. I'm too cheap to buy more than one pack.

Good Idea, you want to get yourself up to pace but eventually you just have to jump in there. Trying out some TMGP is a good way to get a few scares in first.

Texas Mini Grand Prix, it is little bikes but the competition is fierce. It exposes you to being on the track and actually racing. Trying to pass 3 deep in a corner, holding your line and things of that nature.
