What's up, everyone

Hey everybody, I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm new to the motorcycle scene, always wanted to get into riding, but was always afraid I'd kill myself.

Well, years later and the itch never went away so I think I'm going to say " with it" and learn to ride.

I have next to zero experience, I've ridden on the backs of MANY cycles and mopeds on the Greek isles, but have driven myself probably less than 1000 feet my whole life. I'm starting out taking the MSF course, probably this weekend, and I'm thinking about picking up an SV650 as my first ride.

I've always had an eye for sport bikes, but have friends that ride Harleys and stuff and they keep trying to push me in that direction. I figured I'd start with a naked SV650 and decide after a while on that which way to go.

Any tips on where to find a nice SV650 and what I should be paying? Since it's my first bike, I really don't want to spend alot, but I'd like it to to be at least pretty nice.

See you all around!

Great bike if i say so myself. It's my first, lotta fun but fairly forgiving to the noob. Got mine (an 07) back in 09 that was "used" with 17 miles on it for 4600 at wild west honda kawasaki in katy. You should be able to get an older one for a couple of grand.

What's up everyone, thanks for the warm welcome!

I'm definitely pretty excited. I've got a client that has a very lightly used '07 I think that's been sitting in a garage for a year that he might sell me. We'll see what happens, but I'm pretty sure I'll be mounted up VERY soon after finishing the course.

How much you guys think I need to burn on gear?

You can get a good helmet for around $200...wouldn't skimp and get anything really cheap because the summer will make a heavy non-ventilated helmet feel like an oven on your dome.

Get a jacket...I got a cheap Speed and Strength on sale for around $100.

Gloves should be around $40 or so...

As for boots, if you want to get some decent ones made for riding it's about $200 or you can just get some hiking boots with good ankle protection.

Yeah, I was definitely worried about heat. Not interested in messing with all that.

So, realistically I'm probably gonna dump $700-ish on gear?

I think you could get away around $400...really just need a jacket, gloves, and a lid.

There's lids for $100....

Have you looked on CL or our forum for used stuff? What size are you?

I have an 07 S model with the half-fairing that I got in January. It had 8100 miles on it. I paid $3400 out the door which I think worked out to an actual price before TT&L of $3066. It was practically in mint condition with a few cosmetic upgrades so I got a pretty good steal. Kelly Blue Book listed it at $4100. I just happened to run across it on ebay and it was at a dealer in Columbus.

With the 07 you get dual spark plugs for cleaner fuel burn and a few other minor items. Look up the Wikipedia article on the SV if you want to see all the differences through the years.

My SV isn't my first bike as I got it for a track bike, but I think it would make a good first ride. It's very light weight at under 400 pounds and has enough useful power, but it's not high as high strung as a inline four 600cc so it's easy to control and pretty forgiving. It's a little taller seat than the 250cc Ninja that somebody else mentioned but it still shouldn't be a problem.

One plus for the SV is the vast aftermarket parts supply and it's pretty easy to upgrade if you think you start to outgrow it.

And don't forget to check out the SV forums at svrider.com. There's just a stoopid amount of good information over there. I'm SWFCPilot over there and post a bit in the Houston Riders thread.

Oh, and welcome to the addiction!
