Also, I've recently noticed that it sounds like when starting. Almost like there is some grinding or clunking going on... So I decided to replace the starter.

Thanks for the help everybody!

*UPDATE*

*UPDATE* 5-20-11 *UPDATE*

I'm just now getting back to trying to fix this problem. I had wrecked the bike and had to go without for a while, so now that I'm back on two wheels, this whole not starting sometimes thing is a pain in the . Anyway, the following are some recent developments:

1.) Same symptoms as before, so I decided to take the starter apart. Everything seems to be fine to me, so I put it back together. Bike won't start . So I take it off, then apart, put it back together, just for the of it. Now, I'm not too knowledgeable in these things, but I thought that if I were to put the starter terminal directly against the battery + terminal, that it should spin... it doesn't... am I wrong?

2.) I noticed the bike throwing two codes (mind you, this is with the starter off, but...). C11 & C12. The manual says those mean:

FIcodes

Ok, so now I don't know WTF is going on... I may be in a little over my little head here.

I can't seem to figure this one out, and I'm getting sick of something always being wrong with this bike. Not a good year for her... Anyway, do you have any suggestions?

Are you pushing the start button while touching the wires to the starter. The circuit does not stay live.

No.

Like I said, I'm learning. I'm going to leave it alone until the morning. I'll try that out then. Thanks again bluewave!

Ignore my last post... I wasn't thinking clearly last night. I had the starter directly connected to the battery terminal, bypassing everything else.

I put the starter back together just now, and put it back on the bike. And right now it is doing the same "not wanting to start, just making a weird noise" thing. Here's a short vid:

EDIT: I meant to hit preview, not reply... vid will be up shortly

The voltage at the starter when I attempt to start it reads at 11.3x V.

The noise is just the starter spinning, so I assume that somehow the starter clutch isn't spinning... something is off in there.

Okay, I figured it out. At some point previously, it looks like I put something back together wrong. That sprocket that the starter turns wasn't sitting correctly and had gnawed the inside housing some. So that explains why sometimes it would start and other times it wouldn't. Also explains why it sounded like when it started... the inner housing was being ground away. So if I can find a new stator cover, I'll be golden!
