this is the track i usually go to, about 2.5 hrs away...and where the pics i posted were taken:
www.GrangeRaceTrack.com

and yea....all of my body armor is CE approved. i wear Mx boots, knee pads, padded undershorts, full body armor under the jersey, leather gloves. Ive gone down a LOT of times...and never a scratch. well....knock on wood.

and charge $30 too!

ya i'm basically retiring my 426 from my riding all together. That bike just beats me up due to its weight vs. my 135 lbs. I've stopped using it in the woods too.

i do have to sumo wheels for my 250f also...just needing some rubber and maybe a bigger brake...it would be so much more flickable than the 426 was or my 400sm is.

again, welcome back to Houston!

Well. . .what were your results?

And thanks for sharing the pics and the link! I haven't strapped a helmet on in almost 2 years now but i would jump at the chance to take that 450 for a spin in those settings.

I have rode a wr250x and DRZ400sm on the katy track and would rather ride a 450 out there if I can get the chance to. That track is fun and would be even better on a race/true motard.
I will ride my motard with slicks or rain tires at the mx tracks. I just need a working motor.
You should stay in Vegas but if we get a large sumo group here then that will be better for Houston or me, so I can get my true 70/30 sumo track with short straights.

a quick race update...

finished 3rd. beat everyone outta the gate both motos. but a series of small mistakes caught up to me in both races. the top 3 of us were VERY close in overall speed, so it was almost a matter of waiting for the other person to make a mistake. that husky's got some serious bottom end though(the guy with the black leathers). pulls like a tractor off the line. and i could never get a good line in the 3 180's after the dirt section....they cut practice short, so i only had 3 laps on the track prior to the 1st moto. o well. it was a blast nonetheless.

heres a few laps of moto 1.....it should be titled: How to throw away a race!
haha

i will talk with my father about the possibility of building some sort of facility when im there next month. we have a few patches of land in various places just outside of town.

but if i were to seriously think about engaging in such a venture, I would build something that would be able to support karting events as well as AMA supermoto rounds.

what about somewhere out near brazos park? weve got some land out there thats not developed.....hmmm.......

cue the voice..."if you build it, they will come...." haha

Grand Sport Speedway (GSS) and to a lesser extent Mercedes Benz Sugarland Raceway/Motorsports ranch houston (MSRH) are the "tard friendly" tracks in the area. GSS only has trackdays that are split between 3 different groups of bikes, and MSRH has memberships, but they're well beyond the prices you're discussing ($20,000 +$150/mo+$15/day for a "run whenever you want" membership split with cars). They also have trackdays at MSRH.

The Katy karting track (gulf coast karting or something) is way too tight for a big 450, but is great for 100s. If you're really into tards, you could build one of these. Their memberships are $300 a year for a "run whenever you want" membership split with karts.

There are have been talks several times about building sumo tracks and/or adding sumo dirt sections onto existing tracks, but nothing ever comes of them.

No new info, just summarizing what has already been said.

"Thats what she said"

That's your opinion and with a little lube it is a fun track. Have you rode out there?

i think my 250f would be way fun on katy. i think my 426 just rides like a tank and isn't as flickable as a newer 450, and wasn't running well that day...i think it would be a riot....granted i might be just as fast on a 100 there.

i came from a 426 to an 08 yz450.

the 450 is LEAPS AND BOUNDS better in cornering. and i mean the difference is unbelievable.

If I'm going to an MX track, I'm taking the E, not the SM. BTDT, and the kids on their MX bikes fly over me like the old man that I am...

Developing my skills on the SM would interest me. I need to look into something at GSS but I work so much it's hard to schedule things out.
