Is Frank Thomas great? No - not really - but its on par with Tourmaster, Cortech and First Gear. Not as many features, not as well designed for comfort, but a good compromise. Same with BiLT. Its about in line with Tourmaster, Cortech, First Gear, and Shift in terms of quality, but priced less than FT.

Stuff doesn't need to be all that pricey. Think about it. The exterior shells are cordura - a relatively cheap fabric. Double or triple stitching doesn't cost that much more than single, and CE armor is CE armor. Where the real money comes from is marketing, design and comfort features - much like a helmet.
I have crashed wearing Dianese going over 90 and twice wearing Astars going about 60 and 70. Both times the gear came through without a seam failure. I let a friend wear my FT which is CG's brand and it came apart at the seams and he was doing like 40. It was a minor get off that barely scratched his bike.

I saw the Bilt stuff at the cycle gear and it looks just as as the Frank Thomas stuff.

BTW, you can not over do it with gear, get the best stuff you can afford.

Again, I would rather wear used good stuff than new shiny cheap .

I know this by experience.

Anecdote != data. Sorry to burst your bubble.

As others have pointed out, every crash is different, and Dianese and A* have failures too.

Something need not be expensive to be good, and just because it looks good, and costs a bunch, doesn't mean it is high quality.
