Unhappy popping noise

So when i got home from work (took my car) i saw that i needed gas on my ninja. so i went to grab my gear. i put the key into the ignition turned on the bike and 5 seconds after its on POP! it almost sounded like a balloon popping but louder i freaked and immediately turned it off. fear of it catching on fire or something. i looked around for any fluid or leaks of something but didnt find anything. i dont know what it could of been. any idea of what i should do or look for?? thanks in advance guys

oh yeah and the last time i had used it was sometime 7:00 pm friday

Are those bikes still carbed? Sounds like a backfire from a dirty carb.

Did you actually start the bike or just have the ignition on for a few secs then it made a pop?
