i scored a FRREEEEEBIE!!! '79 xs1100 special

so a nice older gentlemen comes into my work the other day. i work the parts counter at a dealership. he wanted to give away this awesome motorcycle!

i feel bad for the guy. he had the bike a real long time, might be the original owner for all i know...anyways, he said he has had the bike in and out of a couple shops. felt like he spent more than it was worth on parts and labor allready, and no one could seem to get it right. (i dont think he took it to any shops with real skill or experience)

he allready got a 03 honda shadow to replace this, and now just didnt have room in the garage. it was literally bumping and scratching up his newer stuff just sitting there, and he was ready to have a wrecker tow it off, but figured he would try to give it to someone first. LUCKY ME! i picked it up this morning, he gave me the title and all, dude even let me borrow his trailer!!!

anyways...it needs the carbs rebuilt and installed, he gave me two sets of used carbs to work with. also needs a battery and maybe chase out some electrical gremlins, but overall its a really good looking bike, especially for a '79! tiny bits of rust here and there, but not much. he also gave me the dress kit, which is a trunk, hardbags, and a huge goldwing style batwing and windsheild for the front. all of that is rusted and corroded bad though.

anyways. i thought i would show the cruiser lounge some love and post up my score. at first i was thinking "fix and sell" but its so cool, and its growing on me. it may just become a "fix and ride and keep".

tell me what you think!

im thinking of keeping it stock. only thing i wanna rebuild is the carbs, throw in a new battery, sort a wire or two...probably going to remove the luggage rack/sissy bar. i think it would look alot sportier without it. i might replace some cables, and flush the brake fluid. ill rebuild the front master if i have to. other than that, im just gonna roll with it as is. only 20k on the odo.

i think im gonna drop back by that dudes house and leave him a gift certificate for our dealership....its the least i could do.

Nice score!
If you decide to sell, I'd like to be first.
I can tell you that '79's were fast for their day. Pretty much considered beasts. But, they are heavy, don't handle all that great and the brakes are like wood.
The reason I am interested is I couldn't afford the 1100 so I settled for the 850. (see my sig pic).
Anyway I got cash if the price is right.
