Puppy Housebreaking Tips?

I just got a new puppy...trying to housebreak him.

Been going outside VERY often...when he wakes up, before bed, before and after he eats, after a play session, etc etc.

He is doing pretty good but he doesn't get the idea that he needs to show me/go to the door something when he needs to go.

He's gone outside...been with me outside for like 30 min, not gone potty, come inside and pee. It's soo frustrating.

Sooo I need some help.
Please help...someone? anyone? :eh:

PS: Attention Scooter Trash--I got a job at the local HD shop up here in Nacogdoches. Thought you'd care.

He seems scared of his crate sometimes.
Everytime I'm gone though...of course he's in the crate and immediately when I get home he goes outside.

He cries in his crate as I leave, and I don't use it for punishment.
It really sucks
I'm trying so hard.
Little is sleeping right now.

Awww!!

+1 for crate training and *NEVER* let him out of your sight. They will sneak off and do their business without you knowing. IF you catch them in the act, but ONLY if it during that act, scare 'em. A loud NO! or UH UH!! with a clap of the hands and immeditiately pick them up and take them outside saying "outside"

Learn his signs before he does the deed. Sniffing a certain area, or circling etc.. Pick 'em up and take them outside. Every time they go in the house, that's a major setback. So again, never let 'em out of your sight!

My dog tells me in different ways. He used to scratch at the door which was oh so obvious, lol. But now he mostly sits down next to me and will subtley glance at the door.

+ 1. She is 2 years now and she never goes inside the house anymore. Even if i don't take her outside, she will hold it until then.

It's my understanding that dogs will not associate being punished for something they've already done. So they don't know the spank was for pee'ing. The only way they will associate it to the bad act is if you catch them *during* the act. That's why I say to never let them out of your sight. If you don't catch them in the act, there's really nothing you can do but clean it up, and clean the spot with that stuff TxVrod mentioned.

True. SoO if you catch him "during", the spanking works. It worked in my case.

Yeah.. I'd prefer not to spank. In my case, I would just scare him. I think it has the same effect with a loud sound, or "NO!".

I just recently got a Mini-Dasch too. A little black and tan female, "Layla".

She does the same thing sometimes, but I give her treats when she goes outside. It seems to be working pretty well.

I'll report back if I find anything that seems to stand out as far as effectiveness.

use crate or cage training until old enough to roam the house. Another good tip is buy a obedience training book and read on it.
