Need some help choosing bike gear

Ok , so I need a new helmet and textile jacket. Now I wanna stick with the same brand for both. I'm looking for nothing too expensive , but something good. I'm looking at Scorpion,Speed & Strength and Icon. I'd like too now the pros and cons with brands especially on the helmet. The jacket is not as important. Thanks guys

After today, I'm sold nothing but Alpinestars for me ever again. I feel I was very fortunate for how everything ended up compared to how it could of been. Also even though I will be the first to say Icon is Parts Unlimited brand and is not highly thought of in the race world. My helmet took a pretty good lick and I'm still around to talk about it, most likely I will invest in a better helmet but it did the job I needed it to do so I won't knock it. Just my 2 cents....

None are what I would consider a good brand, but they know marketing.
Personally as far as helmets, on the low to upper midrange end HJC, Bell and Scorpion are good. As far a jackets and gloves, A Stars, Joe Rocket and Cortech work well among others. Boots? Sidi or Alpinestars.

Here's my .02...
Find a quality, namebrand helmet that is comfortable on YOUR head, has the features you want and THEN worry about price.
My point is, all (decent quality) helmets are pretty good at protecting your head. Some folks think you have to spend $800 but it isn't true. I'm not saying get a $69 helmet either.
Find a good helmet that suits you, fits you and you'll be fine.
Generally ICON gear is not highly regarded but it's ok, I don't know much about Speed and Strength. Scorpion is good stuff, as is, Shoei, HJC, KBC, AGV, Arai and others.

When it comes to leathers, there are horror stories to go with every brand. Some people are convinced that brand "A" is great and brand "B" is , but they all have failures.
A lot depends on the crash. Some crashes will cause any brand to fail, some brands will fail in any crash.
Again, the big names are big because they are pretty good. Astars are good, but like you said, pricey.
I like Fieldsheer, for the price they make some decent stuff. Frank Thomas has gotten a bad rep but I have heard good things too.
As with helmets, stay with the bigger brand names (Frank Thomas is big, IMHO because they are Cycle Gear's house brand not because they are really good quality) and you'll be OK.

The best advice I can give you is go see Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited. He is a straight shooter, he won't steer you wrong and he knows what he is talking about.

Went down with a textile Scorpion and it held up like a champ. I still use it every once in a while. Helmet was a Fulmer and it did it's job to but I would recommend HJC.

After buying less expensive helmets and then using a friend's Shoei, I think I will go that way when I get another helmet. They just feel...better.

But, honestly, go with whatever fits your head the best (I will never buy ICON helmets because it always feels like there is a Smartie at the top of my head inside the helmet). Just keep in mind if you ever want to go to the track that some places require you have a Snell certified helmet (DOT won't cut it). At least that is how it was at home. Not sure about down here.

Try on a bunch of helmets and get one that fits you. Then worry about color scheme. I've got an HJC head so thats what works.

Jackets... Fieldsheer makes a decent entry level jacket, I like Cortech for features that don't break the bank and fit me; your results may vary. Joe Rocket seems to hold up well, ICON is junk in a crash (which is when you need it)

I got my first leather jacket off Fleabay, EXL brand... it is made surprising well and held up fine to a slide down rough asphalt at 50 or so.

For occasional track days might consider a two piece suit..

Yea I actually tried a friends icon helmet yesterday. It felt ackward on me , I have a scorpion 700 right now and I like it but I think it's a little too big. I gonna go a size down for sure.
