Street Legal dirtbike

Some friends and I just hit up Hidden Falls this past weekend and rented a few dirtbikes and ATV's.

Its been years since I've ridden offroad, I forgot how fun it was!

I'm interested in getting a dirt rig in the future, and doing a little research to see what'd be a good fit for me. I want to run something used, and wouldn't mind riding something quite a bit older, either.

I don't intend on racing it, and will rarely even see a track. It will be used for dirt riding first and foremost, so it'll wear full knobbies. If I need to change tires for passing inspection, its no biggie.

I'm 6'3" and about 255 lbs so I'll need something that can haul me around, preferably electric start! And yes, I'll mod it

Any recommendations? What models should I look at? Stay away from?

Thanks for any input!

I love my DR350, but you should take a look at the Dr650. KLR650, Xr650's as well even though they are heavier they hold their own on the trail. You could also get a straight dirtbike if you dont want an enduro, looks like your familiar with KTM, and there are SO many options with them.
Are you looking more for a dual-sport or strictly dirt (not street legal)

Funny you say DR350, the bike I rode this weekend was a '94 DR350! Transmission was mush and the thing was to get kicked over every time, but what do you expect with a ragged out rental? Despite this it still held its own, and did everything this newb asked it to! Honestly, for the goofing off I want to do, the 350 would do just fine. Enough power (stock) and light enough that I could flick it around.

If I get something, its gotta be street legal. I hate having something in the garage I can only look at, and not take for a spin around the block, or to the store, or hooligan around whenever I feel like.

Whatever I ride will have true dirt tires on it, not an enduro tire. Dad has a KLR650, which is a really fun and capable bike, but to take it on the trails I'd throw some real tires on it!

(On a side note, I may have an extra set of street tires mounted up for a motard setup, just to have the option!)

The drz400 dual sport might be a good bike for you.

I had seen a few on CL, and the prices are very reasonable too. I think they have a pretty good artermarket following, which is good for parts availability.

I'm not a big suzuki fan but i've heard great things about those bikes and yes, they do have a pretty good aftermarket following and pricing.

drz400 is the 350's big brother, and they are very reliable. To qoute Mr.P " They do everything ok, but nothing well" But for what you are looking to do I think its a great option. The one thing I like about the 350 is it has a 6 speed gearbox.

+1 on the DRZ, and get the E and plate it. Easy to do as long as you have the title and a better dirtbike (than the S) out of the box.

Not sure exactly. My buddy called Hiddel Falls directly and spoke to Bob, and he got it all set up. The rigs weren't the greatest, but they were still a hoot to play around on.
