Anyone have any experience with potato guns???

My friend and I built one a few days ago and we could not get it to fire. Finally we managed to get two shots out of it, but now it is back to not firing. Can anyone help me figure out the problem???

is it airtight? what are you using for spark? fuel? do you know you can hurt yourself with that thing, and posession of one can put your in jail? you obviously don't know what you're doing, so use caution with that thing bro.

use hairsprsy for fuel and for your ignition get one ot those long grill lighters and take the end off and then put the ignition wires in the pipe and seal it off. don't get you ignighter wet when you shoot the hairspray in if you can help it.

grill lighters suck for potato guns. they work, but they're not the best option IMO. Go to the camping section of your neighborhood Wal-Mart and get a flint striker for a coleman lantern(about $3). drill a hole in the side of the "combustion chamber" of your potato gun, do not place it on the cap. I have seen potato guns blow the cap right off the end and break fingers, we don't need that. since you seem new to this, cheap aerosol hair spray will work just fine as your fuel. it's inexpensive and readily available. this is one case where more is less. a small spray into the "gun" will suffice, too much and you will displace Oxygen (oxygen is vital to combustion). have fun and be safe, but remember this. . .if you play with fire long enough, you're gonna get burned.

Am not new too this it has just been a while. We are using static guard as a fuel and it works great. Spark comes from a grill lighter connected to two screws that run into the combustion chamber. The problem was oxygen, we figured it out last night. We were able to get it to work after we figured out our oxygen problem and it shot about 300 yrds. we also used starter fluid and it shot them alot farther but not sure how far.

i believe the october issue of Popular Mechanics has a "how to" article on building a potato gun. Said right guard (spray) is great for fuel. I miss potato guns. My brother once built a pg that we used to shoot C batteries through our fence....it was awesome.
