Assessing a motorcycle buy = ZX12R

Ok guys looking at a few zx12r and found one that looks a bit pieced out and in need of clean up.... its a 2000 with aftermarket paint (so it possibly been laid down) and has 35k miles... How long will these engines run with good maintenance?

Ive got this info from the seller as well:
Quote:
It has 34k miles, yes it was repainted, no it's never been dropped (surprisingly) clean title, does need tires, and I'm puttting a bolt kit on it (as the plastics are zip tied right now). The previous owner took it in to a small shop to have it tuned up and they did a horrible job left wires out and didn't even bolt the fairings back. I can fix all that, it still could use a decent tune up, cause it take a few minutes to warm up in the cold. Once its warm it runs great.
Ive talked the seller down to what i think is a reasonable price with the amount of money i will have to put into it... My biggest issue would be the motor and any excessive blowby due to the high mileage and possible lack of maint.

here is a link to the bike:

way too high, buying a bike with high mileage is always a mystery.. normally if its kept up then they should run fine but i'd offer like 3,200 and see what he says. at that price you could just take it to the shop and have them do a full tuneup, tear it apart and get it all squared away, just bore it out if its that totally eff'd.

and seriously, zip-tied on plastics with a repaint job? its been down. the boot-leg shop work he described isnt exactly inspiring either.

I figured if I could get it down around 3200-3500 id be ok then after a legit tune up and squaring it away id be alright. Im thinking its still too big a risk, better off just spending the extra money buying something clean?

I agree. It does not sound like it has been taken care of at all.

3200-3500 is not a bad price. The mileage isn't a big deal depending on how it was abused. Main issue I would worry about is that the trans shifted fine and there is no obvious frame damage.. even tho he says it's never been down.

He comments that the shop that did the tune up left the fairings unbolted so that may be true.

Plus side it's an unrestricted 00 first year. The A1/A2 are just a bit more "raw" than the 02 and up, powerwise. Definately will get your attention.

They are out there with less miles and better condition for closer to 5K, but you have to search. It would be worth a trip up to CS to check out I would think.

You would be much better off buying that chicks 954RR that is for sale here for $3500.... It looks to be in great shape.

I do like ZX12s but....I'm not buying a pile that needs a bunch of work. The engines are solid if they have been well maintained but if the maintenance history is questionable, I would stay clear of them. They have enough bottom end issues as it is, especially if oil maintenance was nil.

I understand wanting a 12. IMO if you know you're gonna have to spend X to get it right, spend it up front on a better one.

I'm not afraid to drop a little coin on it to get it in decent shape. I can do most of the work myself. I figured if its mechanically decent and the bike is straight... I can tune it up and clean it up while still being able to have cheap transport for the time being. Diesel prices are killing me!

Thanks for the info bros a zx12 is the only bike I'm interested in. If I got anything else it would be another victory kingpin...

Go look at the 02 954 for sale here....its only got 14k miles for $3500... I'm not affiliated with it but it is a great deal.....it would be a good commuter bike, stock with a slip on and honda reliability. Something to think about.

I dunno, I have a hard time dropping that kind of coin on something you know right off the bat is gonna cost more to get squared away.

Even if you dropped the coin for a big bore kit, had the carbs are gone through, you still have to consider the wear and tear on the suspension, charging system, and wiring harness.

At 35K on the engine, and being a Kawi, what kind of shape is the tranny in? It's going to be a pain in the if you have to split cases to change a shift fork, or gears.

I'd hold off a little longer, or if you really want to work on something, look for a wrecked 14. There's got to be one piled up somewhere that wouldn't require as much work.

The 12R is a little easier to drop the tranny on, the case comes apart horizontally rather than vertical. Still a pain but less than others.

poopstinkalot, have you ridden a 12R or sat on one?

yes I have, Same thing with almost every bike out there. The 12 is more comfortable to me than any other sport bike ive ridden.

I dont like zx14's they just dont appeal to me. same with a busa. the 12 looks awesome, is comfortable, and is really the only bike that a 280lb guy can get on and not look like im about to swallow it in my .

I have no interests in a 1000 street bike, or a 954 for that matter.

I have no problems holding out for a cleaner one as well... Which is probably what ill do. I have some larger pictures ill post up which show me that it hasnt been maintained very well...

Sounds like you have gone thru the same decision process I did before I bought my second one.

Hadn't really given them much thought until I put Pigpens back together.. and even tho the ZX14 are awesome bikes the looks just kill it for me.

That 04 in Dallas I linked is nice. Plus the 04 up have radial brakes which are just icing on the cake. Plus even tho it doesn't have a bunch of extras, it is really nicely maintained.
