I broke my DRZ-Sm already :(

So saturday I put about 100 miles on my brand new DRZ400SM. I went to Motorcycles Unlimited got my suspension set up (rides awesome!!) and bought some parts for it and rode to my buddies house in Cypress. Rode home to switch out bikes so I can keep up with my buddy on his ZX10. I parked the DRZ in the garage and the next morning I was going to ride it to Lowes. Come to find out the battery was completely dead!!! I put a meter on it and it showed 2v. Battery tender wont even try to charge it. So being a sunday and dealers arent open till tuesday and by the time they actually get me a battery I said screw it and bought one at Cyclegear cuz I was anxious to ride it.

WHen I put the new battery on it I turned the ignition sw on. The guages and lights came on, as soon as I hit the starter button I heard a click and the lights and guages went out like I blew a fuse.Checked fuses and they are all good.
Funny thing is when I checked the new battery voltage it had 2v too!! When I disconnected the battery terminals I checked the voltage again and it read 12.5v..so with the bike hooked up to the battery it is causing the voltage to drop to 2v telling me there is a short on my brand new bike!! I checked grounds/connections and wiring. I ohmed out alot of and found nothing.
I isolated to positive side of the wires that go to the CDI, rectifier, headlight and guages. I think somehow my rectifier/regulator is shorted out...I disconnected the headlight and tail light and that didnt help. Looking at the schematic the regulator rectifier is the only thing left. Since the dealer is open tomorrow I put it all back together and I am gonna bring it to them tomorrow morning I prbably wont see it for another week

That really stinks man. You'd think there'd be some kinda inline fuse or something before the rectifier to prevent it from burning up?

Once it's fixed let me take her around the block, I always wanted to ride one and see what the hoopla is all about.

I did the Sisneros trick for the battery upgrade. One of the best mods I've done so far to that bike:

http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=636987

I did this upgrade two years ago and it's been fine. I had a trickle charger set up before and always seemed to have problems with the stock battery. Since the upgrade it's been drama-less starts, regardless of how long it sits.

Sounds like you may have a legitimate short, but the stock battery is pretty weak under the best of circumstances.

I've been hearing grumblings about suzuki rectifiers. Never experienced one, but apparently its not uncommon? At least its an easy fix, and is unlikely to ever return.

I know it's a problem that likes to show it's ugly face in GSX-R's. I think even a few Triumph Daytona's had the problem too.

VFR's also have notoriously bad rectifiers. I went through 4.
