When I worked for a dealership the reason they wanted a customer to bring in their bike for first service was to go over the bike and make sure all bolts were still tight and notning was loose or had fallen off the bike. For them its a liability issue so they can make sure you dont have a reason to sue them if the bike fails and you crash.

Many dealeships try to pressure and imply you will void your warranty if you dont come back for the break-in check. If they were smart they would do it for free to make sure the bike isnt about to loose an important bolt or nut.
