Assume you WILL drop it. If you get lucky and you dont, goodie for you.

Do yourself a favor though before you plunk down the cash...sit on, and if possible, ride a variety of different TYPES of motorcycles.

Yes, the ones with full fairings look sexy as . They also cost a lot when you drop them.

No, cruisers dont look like much, but they'll put the wind in your face just as well as a supersport, and do it without encouraging you to over-ride your skills.

Sport tourers are comfy, and have storage, but they're also more of a 2nd or 3rd bike - not a first bike. They tend to have longer legs than a commuter, but also a load of power.

Classics and cafe racers are also excellent ideas. Good for a lot of around-town riding, stylish, reliable, but they're slow.

Dual sports are ugly as sin, but are some of the most comfortable and competent bikes out there. Pricey for the good ones, but tough to break.

Yep...ugly as they are, I'm starting to seriously consider one. Not for the off road capacity, but simply because many of them are near bulletproof.

I know this wasn't aimed at me but i'll answer anyway lol. My first street bike was actually a cruiser(honda shadow 750), I wanted a sport bike, but I figured it was a good way to ease into commuting on a bike(it topped out at about 100). about 1 1/2 years later, I got my 675, and even having experience on a street bike, this bike scared the out of me for a little while, the first week i was thinking "what have you gotten yourself into, you're gonna die, real soon". I've out run liter bikes through turns, and I've had my handed to me by guys on 250s in the turns, It's all about how you ride, not so much what you ride.

I took MSF. I had dirt bike experience prior to that but not much. Instructor at mancuso said he thought I would be fine starting on a 600. I haven't dropped it or wrecked it and it was brand new and my first bike. Some people are capable of starting on a 600. However my friend tried to do the same and didn't take MSF. He bought a used CBR 600RR and dropped it 10 times in the first month! It just depends on the person. Ask your instructor what he thinks at the end of MSF. If he says no I would take his advice.

Like Triumphant, it wasnt aimed at me but I'll take a stab at it.

I was first interested in sport bikes. Took the MSF class, and realized I liked the feel of a cruiser better.

Started out with a Yamaha V-Star 1100, moved to a V-Star 1300 ( of a bike - seriously under-appreciated), and then onto HD's best touring bike, a Road Glide. Next one will likely be a BMW K1200LT, or finances permitting, a K1600GTL. I've ridden a variety of bikes from supersports to dualsports, but just find myself coming back time and time again to the big luxo-tourers.

Fast? No - not really. Good handling? Only compared to a drunken tree sloth. Heavy? Oh yes - they suck in stop and go traffic. Comfortable? Yep - did my first 1000 mile day without even realizing it. No fatigue, no lower back pain, - felt better than 500 miles in the car.

That's what I was going to do.....Thank you because everyone is telling me what kinda bike to get. So I will take your advise and ask the instructor.
