I saw one on craigslist for about $1500...I think it should be under $1k though. I've got an SR500 that I'm wanting to do the same thing with. Just don't have the time. It's not even that expensive to trick out...just need time for lots of elbow grease...good luck with your project!

I gave away a perfect running 81 Maxim 650 when I left NY. Had a dent in the tank, and about 20k miles on it. I kick myself for that. It was a cool little bike with some pretty good torque.

standard bars? I got a of a deal on mine it was all rebuilt from the ground up Sparx ignition system, pamco ignitor, mikuni carbs and so on also its a rear disc model i got about 1500 in total in mine and im getting ready to tear it down and put it in a hardtail frame

talking to me? it was the rectifier. and when it went out it took out a fuse inside the tail section that i didnt know was there. its all gravy now baby. been riding to work everyday. right at 400 miles this past week.
