Tranny Slips in 3rd

Took my bike out for a ride this past saturday and noticed that around 7k - 9k RPMs in 3rd the tranny slips for just a second if you hammer on the throttle. Experimented a little and found out it only happened in 3rd gear around those RPMS doesn't happen if your smooth with acceleration. This morning on my way to work I noticed in 3rd the same thing happens now around 5k-6k RPMS it feels like the bike coughs then catches. WTF? could it be a dirty injection needle?, need to change my oil? I have had no tranny issues before and this only happens in 3rd gear.

Slipping would result in the rpms coming up without the requisite increase in speed. Coughing is something else entirely. Can you be more specific?

Oil wont affect it if its a trans slip as that would.mean damage is already done, that would be a bent shift fork,

Could be a few diff things, what all has been done to the bike aftermarker? Are u 100% sure it only does it in 3rd?

And please describe it more in detail. If u want call me and ill check it out. 832 367-7618,

the best way I can explain it is when I twist the throttle the bike responds in accelaration then there is a slight bog maybe a half second the tach does not jump it just kind of hiccups and then it continues (does that make sence?) it kind of feels like I'm chopping the throttle. And yes as of now it only happens in 3rd there are no wierd noises being made, everything that affects the engine is stock only aftermarket parts are my levers

Isnt the 636 known for bad transmission? Seems like ive heard from Dudewheresmybike and several other 636 owners that the trans will lose certain gears. even saw one on judge judy cause someone bought a 636 and it was doing the same thing.

Sounds like a bent shift fork. The slipping you're feeling is the gears unloading from the engagement dogs and then reengaging.

Those kawis are known for this. Tim for u to shell out the money for new shift forks, shift drum, and a few new gears. Don't get used. The labor is gonna be the expensive part

The 03-04 isn't known for it. The 05's are the ones that can have the problems. Even then, they're second gear.

I always hear about bikes having issues with 2nd thats why I though it was kind of odd that I had issues with 3rd only.

A bent shift fork is not what causes it to jump in and out of gear.......A bent fork IS what causes the initial tranny problem because it's not fully engaging the gears during shifts....this causes the engagement DOGs on the GEARs to start to round off on the corners. These dogs and edges cut on the gears is what locks the gears into each other after a shift is completed....actually they help during the shift "pull" the gears together.

If you are just missing shifts all together or getting false neutrals, it's probably bent forks....BUT if you are already in a gear, say 2nd or 3rd and hammer it and the bike is jumping in and out of gear or it feels like the chain is skipping teeth on the sprocket, then you likely have rounded engagement dogs.

The tranny will have to be sent out to be undercut and possibly replace some gears.

636 and zx10 trannies are prone to losing 2nd.... Just like the early 2000 R1s....

It won't need to be undercut. He will probably need at least one fork, 2 gears and possibly a drum as some of them had an issue to on that bike.
The engine needs to come out and the cases split in order to determine what parts are necessary and to replace them.

doesn't sound like good news, my issue sounds a lot like the dogs he described above.
