Welcome to the Family. You're not far from some decent roads past Conroe/Montgomery when you're comfortable enough at highway speeds and can exercise emergency stopping.

Whomever you learn to ride with, take their advise w a grain of salt and remember they arent all knowing. Everyone has a different riding style based on comfort etc and the biggest advantage a group can offer a new rider is protection from vehicles during a ride. Seek experienced riders(doesnt always mean fast) that will offer suggestions based on not just corner store/bar riding but track to get different ideas and examples of riding characteristics and theories.

The worst offered is continuous need for riders to feel like they need to show off to eachother and not dedicate their ride/time to the new rider. If you ever feel like you have to keep up with them, slow down even more. Egos dont get you far on two wheels.

First not last, always gear up and leave plenty of room to avoid a mishap. Ride safe!

Good post man! And Welcome! I started riding on the street with a 6 but I would love to have a 250 even now just for fun. I'm sure you will make the right choice after you have sat on a few if you haven't already. I wish you luck on your purchase, and hope to see you at one of the meets

The community goes beyond whether you have a bike or not. Several northsiders rarely ride and some frequent these sights hadnt in a year or so. We dont discriminate... unless you ride a Yamaha(JK). You get out of the community what you put in. I still recommend coming out to the meets, getting to know local riders and plug yourself in. Since everything we do revolves around food meets(even rides) there's always a place to hang out and chat. Also a good time to sit on bikes and get a better idea vs a blind purchase based on a saleperson's perspective.
