MOTOHOUSTON COOK-OFF 2011!!

bbq country style ribs

Solracer and I have decided that since there hasn't been a MH bbq since '08 that what we are going to do for 2011 is have a Motohouston cook-off. What this means is each area of town (SE, SW, HAK, CENTRAL, etc) will put together their own teams and prepare for some major -whippin by the SE side . We are shooting for an April date, but the exact date will be determined by us. This gives everyone time to get their teams together, their recipes perfected, their pits/smokers together (lord knows i need a new one especially if I'm gonna actually compete), etc. Him and I will get together soon and discuss the technicals as far as exact date, entry date deadline, location, rules, judges, etc.

NUMBER ONE RULE: ALL MEMBERS OF THE TEAMS MUST BE MOTOHOUSTON MEMBERS.
This means you can't get your dad/brother/uncle/cousin/weekly hooker to be a part of your team cause they have an uber recipe and you dont know how to operate a pit. That's a big no-no. This is a MH cook-off, so let's keep it within the members list, otherwise it kinda defeats the purpose.

LOCATION: We will try to find something as central as possible, but we have to take into consideration that the place has to allow people to bring their own pits, not be hounded by the po-po, and preferably a place that allows drinking. I don't know about you, but I like my beer when im grilling. If anyone has some land they'd like to share for this event, that would be just awesome as and we will certainly make sure you get blasted all over the place for your generosity.

CRITERIA TO BE ENTERED: obviously, we can't have people just bring some random food like a pot luck meal, so there will be specific foodz allowed to be entered for judging. The obvious ones will be brisket, beans, chicken, ribs (pork or beef). This is another issue Chris and I will discuss and get ironed out as I'm sure there will be others. Feel free to bring whatever you like, but keep in mind once the criteria has been set in stone, only THOSE items will be judged.

RECIPES: Your recipes must be your own. What I mean is, you CAN use your dad's, grandpa's, aunt's, etc recipe. That is fine. But what you CAN'T do is go to your local grocery store and buy a bottle of A-1 and slap it on the meat. That's a no-no. This is a cook-off, not a back yard bbq. We know that traditionally everyone uses a smoker, but if you prefer to use gas, then by all means do so. It's your food, feel free to use your method of choice.

KEEP IT CIVIL: When we get this together and it actually takes place, behave yourselves people. This kinda goes without saying, but I said it anyway.

TEAMS: It's best to keep your teams to a 3 to 4 person crew. If there is a lot of interest then there is absolutely nothing wrong with having more than one team from an area. The more the better.

This thread has been started today, so you have four months to get your stuff together. It is recommended that each team have a "captain" so that they can keep things organized and together. Ormand will be the lead judge because, quite frankly, all he does is eat. There is nobody better suited for this job . He will be hand picking the other judges himself. He does not eat pork, so whomever he chooses will have to be able to consume swine without off the gods.

So Lets get it going people! Get your teams, your captains, your recipes, team names, and everything else lined out and let's make this one of a cook-off!

Judge: Ormand

Team 1: I will be leading up the SE team. No name yet since I don't have any members yet and we will all decide this together.

Team 2:...

NOTE: ALL MOTOHOUSTON MEMBERS ARE WANTED, ENCOURAGED, AND WELCOME TO ATTEND, WHETHER YOU'RE PARTICIPATING IN THE COOK-OFF OR NOT. THERE WILL BE GAMES HELD AND JUST A GENERAL GOOD TIME AND GET TOGETHER.

I've already got a couple folks in mind for a north side team.
First ones name starts with a "G" and ends with an "odsuki".

I wouldnt be so concerned about how central it is. most improtant is parking and space for us mh junkies to spread def 50 friendly too lol

I already know what me and my buddies on the nawf side will be cookin. woo hoo
ya we understand it may not be centrally located, but we'll do the best we can to find one. if not, oh well. bbq cooks the same no matter where the pit is.

The deelish could be compelling

So we need another judge who can eat pork/seafood. Kinny? Riaz? Justine?

It should be at least 4 judges IMO. I voted for Brett in the other thread.
I would be a judge also. But with 4 it should consist of 2 south siders and 2 north siders IMO.

As far as parks go, maybe a scouting trip is in order. In the SE we have great parks with tons of parking like Clear Lake Park and Challenger Park...but something more central might be nice.
