Carb Tuning

So I got my new little 50 running pretty smooth at idle, all throttle positions and engine braking after playing with it.

But it runs really rough at the top of 3rd gear. Is this probably just the stock rev limiter kicking in?

turn your high speed mixture screw out alittle less than a 1/4 turn, you could start with a 1/4 turn more out, if that doesnt work than you might need a bigger jet, what size is in it now?

High speed screw? what are you talking about? It's an idle screw. Only affects the throttle down low. We are working with a 50 carb not a weed eater.

On a side note. Sounds like it may be starving for fuel on the top end. Try move the clip on the needle one spot richer. See it it get better. Also an easy way to tell if it's running lean is run it till it starts to sputter and hold it there. The put the choke on. If it gets any better with it on you need to richen it up.

Always make a log of your carb adjustments so you can work back to your current setting if you need to. Stock exhaust and filter? Have you checked for air leaks? Does it pop on decel in 3rd gear pinned?

This too! If you can't figure it out swing it by. I've got a couple extra jets for the 88 kits. I'll get her running right.

No change with fuel mixture screw anywhere from 1/2 a turn up or down. Though it gets worse the more you go down.

It pops on accel in 3rd gear, and a very little bit on decel.

I'm up to shimmed the throttle needle out with a washer, turned the mixture screw out 2 turns and its basically the same. It runs like a champ until the top of each gear and then it kicks back a little. No more decel pop at all though.

It sounds to me like you might have an air leak causing it to lean out on the top end. . .no more 42mph runs until you pull the spark plug and post up a picture. You can check for air leaks with some starting fluid sprayed on your carb boots.

Am... it has a idle screw that adjusts the idle and a fuel air mixture screw.... they are right next to each other on the carb.

It still does nothing on the top end of the spectrum. I think you're missing the point. Where he is having problems the screw will do nothing.

i got ya, so his problem is most probably in the main jet, or a air leak
