Cheap "throw down" bike needed for beginner...

I have a friend that wants to start riding. His Dad has always ridden and many of our friends ride, but he just never really rode a motorcycle...weird...I know.

Anyway - we're trying to find a cheap motorcycle for him to learn on. Something around the $400-600 price range. Doesn't have to be a street bike...a dirt bike would do just fine.

Just need something with a clutch that runs good. Doesn't have to be pretty...just functional so he can get the basics of clutch work, balance, etc... Located in the League City/Clear Lake area but will drive all over Houston for the right deal.

Instead of spending $ on a "cheap throw down" bike, why not take
MSF at one of the sights sponsors and then get a not so throw down bike
if he likes it?

Not really my decision, but I will suggest it. I think it is a great idea to buy a cheap dirt bike to learn on, ride in some trails for a couple months, AND take the MSF. After that I think he could be ready for the road, but I will see if he has thought about the MSF yet.

What kind of dirt bike? I have a decent TTR125 for sale. Throw it down all day long. It's in this price range, too.

MSF has a dirt bike class also. Honda of Houston hold it.

All that is required for either is you can ride a bicycle.

When I took MSF for my M endorsement and when my son took the dirt bike
class I can assure you there were people there that hadn't done more then
sit on a scooter before.

Throwing someone elses scooter down FTW!

Either way it's still cheaper to get propper instruction from someone who is
skilled in it. Beats buying a scooter just to find out for some odd reason you
are unable to manipulate a 2 wheeled motorized device.

I had been riding my cruiser for about 6 months before I took my MSF course. There were people there that had never ridden before that got a better final score than I did. They were already doing circles, figure 8's, slaloms, hard braking, etc.

You ride sooo much those 2 days I was literally sick of riding.
