You mean like the ones that promised when Beltway 8 was paid for, they'd get rid of the tolls? They're still in office.

Face it, most people are too stupid to realize when they're getting screwed.

Oh and don't misunderstand, I'm against the red light cameras and happy this passed. I was just saying it may not be over yet.

My wife got caught by one a few years ago and I did not pay it either. I heard that in Houston they can put it on your credit record but I have already sent a letter to all 3 credit agencies that if they ever do that I will have a lawyer on their the next day. It took me 10 years to fix my credit after my divorce. I refuse to let these screw it up for me. Oh and the above post is correct. These cameras are illegal and if you abide by them you are in fact not following the law, you are giving up your citizens rights.

Oh I understand that - believe me...

However, considering general anti-government sentiment which seems to be reaching a near flash-point...it would be in their best interests to listen.

Awesome news. The city says the cameras will remain active until Jan 1 2011. Either way, this is excellent news.

True. But that's all they ever had in this. It is and always was about the money. I don't see them being successful at keeping the cameras up.

I recognize it will take time to remove them and everything, but if the city needs volunteers to take them down, I'm positive they could find enough people who would very happily donate their time and ammunition to make them non-serviceable.

Angry

it's is a waste of money if we go through the process of voting it down ,then city counsel continues on with the red light camera.
That would truly suck .

I agree with Challen. I don't even see them taking the cameras down but possibly integrating them in with TXDOT's cameras to keep an eye on moving traffic surveillance. And if the city council decided to keep the red light cameras in operation and continued issuing tickets, they would be able to do so even if some folks were replaced. Some looked at the whole process as an additional tax...when, in Houston's history, has a tax ever been revoked? And the drainage tax? Look for it to increase year to year. No, not gloom and doom Just looking at the whole concept from a politician's viewpoint. And the fat lady ain't sung yet.

Voting this down just told all the red light runners that it is now "open season" again to run red lights at will.

Just hope the light they run is not the one where you are in the intersection on your bike..

Or maybe it will prevent that skittish young person from locking up the brakes at a yellow light causing a chain reaction?

No it isnt. Running a red light is still illegal.

What this does is require the city to do its job and actually prove guilt rather than require you prove innocence.

Red light cameras do not magically stop people from running the lights. Otherwise there would be no tickets given out once they are installed.

IE. People run red lights with cameras or not.
