Get the 650. You will want to trade up 6-12 months later anyways. Just take it easy and practice what you were shown in MSF. People will preach about the 250 and how it can be fast in capable hands, and that is true, but just because a good driver can drive fast in a Ford Fiesta doesn't make owning one any more desirable.

I rode a 650R for a while. Fantastic bike. If I could have 2 bikes, I would have my 600rr for track and twisties... and the 650r for everything else.

The 650R just does everything.

...lastly...

BUY USED. Do not buy it new.

Suzuki makes a 500 that will put you right in the middle. I think you will be more comfy at this size. Not too small not too bike. I think they have 40 hp. so again right in the middle. ...and A TON of replacements parts around when you drop it a couple of times.

Ok, so here's what I'm thinking...

After being told many, MANY times... You guys are right. I should buy used. Not to mention... Buying a used 650 would lower my payments, so that I could use the savings for everything else (read: INSURANCE).

Used, used, used. I'd love a newer used, but if I'm going used.... I'm opened to any brand. What do you guys recommend? I was going with the brand new 250R originally, mainly because... I wanted a brand new bike, and that's what I could afford. xD

If you are going to make payments, allot more money for insurance. Full coverage will keep you from paying a note on a stolen bike.

Go look at Trini's 500. It's in perfect shape and I still say you can ride it faster than many think. Lots of people used to race them, great track bike if you want it for that eventually.

I've owned over 40 bikes, next to a Hawk GT or SV650, it's perfect for newer riders. I say this because it's forgiving and at the same time, easy to cheaply upgrade as you become faster. Insurance is cheap as well. Spend the savings on good gear and track days.

I haven't ridden a 650R, although I admit, I like them. If the costs is the same, maybe the 650R is a better choice.

Just sayin...

ya i have a 08 650r and it was my first bike love it. it better for riding around town. I letter moved to a zx6r and the 650r was a great stepping stone. Its got more torque for riding two up and getting up two speed on the high way. I might be putting it up for sale too but dont know for sure, money is getting tight and bike is in great shape with only 7k. but i would go with a 650

I bought an sv650 for my first bike and it is a of alot of fun, I'm 5'10 195 and it is plenty fast to not "grow out of ". It also has very manageable power, it's not a rocket ship strait line bike, but you can still go beyond your comfort level in some twisties.

I think this is the most productive thread I've ever created, here or anywhere else! Definitely the most helpful for myself.

I'll be getting a decent amount of cash for my birthday (the day I'm buying the bike), and I'm counting on that to buy the bulk of my gear. And i'm already factoring insurance into my financial situation.

I would really love it if there were a way I could just take a 250 and a 650 out on a ride, see which one I fall in love with... Ya know?

I hate to direct an option away from Trini's bike, or the other's here, but I saw this on TWT and thought it might be an option. Looks good and the price is nice. Never ridden one, but seems to be a good all around bike with a little power.
