Difference between Factory and Conversion SuperMoto?

I want a super Moto. I have a few questions though.
  • Which is better?
  • Whats the difference
  • Which is cheaper
  • Which lasts the longest
  • Differences between supermoto and streetbike
  • any other information you can offer.

I have some liquid money and I want another bike. Should I get a dirt bike on cl and take of the dirt tires and put street tires or what do you suggest?

Depends on how you want to use it. Generally, the converted ones are faster at the track and worse on the street.

You can find converted track only motards fairly cheap, like around 2-3K. To convert one well, you will spend 900-2500 on wheels, tires, brakes, etc.

Street legal bikes go for much more money if they were converted well.

Expect a lot of oil changes on the 450 liquid cooled types. Go air/oil cooled for lots of street use, or get a DRZ400SM.

I know of two very nice tards for sale right now in the 2700-2800 range that are 450 liquid cooled converted dirt bikes that were done properly, but they are not street legal.

To be honest, I have a street legal KTM and I rarely ride it on the street anymore thanks to Tim, Groove Union, and GSS that allow me to get my fix.

Speaking of GSS, you ought to head there tomorrow to talk the tard group. Lots of good people with good advice, from all perspectives.

You want one of the best supermotos... Check the Aprilia SXV 550... My 09 is for sale... 350 miles on it. Check the bikes section.

Well the one you are selling is like 6000 dollars. I have liquid cash but not that MUCH liquid cash.

I was thinking about getting like a 500-1000 dollar dirt bike from Craigslist. Then drop another 800-900 bucks into the street conversion.

I guess what im asking is... Do dirt bikes hold up to the high RPM's from riding on the streets?

Get one done up already. Cost quite a bit set one up properly. Not to say you cant have fun on a dirt bike with street tires, but you will be limited if you start hitting the track.

You also have to factor in making it street legal if you do a conversion from a full MX bike to a street legal motard. Like what was said above, a converted bike will be fast on the street but it wont be meant for it. Those are very high maintenance bikes made for starting line to finish line riding. Not for mileage. BUT those will rip the street apart. Oil changes will be frequent and all other maintenance will put a dent in your pockets especially when it comes to the motor. 2 great factory supermotos you could get for a decent price are the suzuki SM and the yamaha wr250x SM bike. Both those were made for the street and mileage. Not near as much "pep" but they do have enough grunt for some serious fun and you won't have to worry near as much about maintanence compared with a conversion. Not to mention they are already tagged and street legal.

just my .02

it really only took a drill, a few drill bits, and a few carb jets to "pep" up my 400sm from the factory...of course I didn't stop there.

I love my factory street tard, but like everyone said, it isn't anything like my converted 426 was in grunt.

for a mostly street tard, i'd suggest purchasing a factory made model. It's great around town.

price can vary. I bought my 07 in 08 for far less with a Louisiana salvaged title that I transferred to a Texas Rebuilt.

I think there was an 09 on here in the classifieds for about that price.

Or.....

For $2500 shipped to your door, you can get a pitster pro 250. (only china brand i'd allow you to buy - designed in usa/built in china)

This is a full size 250 & i believe its street legal.

Heard some good reviews on SMJ.

PitsterproXTR 250 motard

I'd recommend replacing ALL the fluids that come with the bike though.

Lol. Ya, if my ole lady said she wanted to get into riding, I'd prolly start her on one of those.

There's a thread on it at Smj. I beleive the guy has done some minor mods ( bigger carb I think) and hasn't had any issues w/ it.
