+1

I've waited tables in the past, and I know from experience it's a shitty job. If the service is great, the food is great, etc. I'll leave at LEAST $5, sometimes even $10-20. If the server isn't all that enthusiastic (i.e. doesnt seem like they want to be there, has to have me say what i want 2 or 3 times before they get it down, etc.), I'll leave $2 or so. If the service flat out sucks, I don't leave ...and if the service sucks , the food isnt all that great, and I can't find the server to get my check, I'll walk the **** out.

not into tipping big, 20-25% tops and thats rare. i;ve started 2x the tax, maybe a lil less maybe a lil more.

wife when she was waiting tables, when we ate out, wanted to tip big. now she's not and she's back to normal again.

I usually do 20% if my tea-glass doesn't go empty (3-4 refills minimum). If you bring my food and I never see you again then you might get a couple of dollars.

Had a waiter at a Chinese restaurant come up to me at the register and ask for a tip. I told him that I was paying with a credit card but since he asked I wasn't leaving him chit.

I've never waited tables nor do I ever wish to. Screw having to deal with people and there persistant all the time. However, I generally tip 15% if my tea or soda doesn't run empty for more than 3 minutes. If service is great or the girl is really good looking I'll tip 20-25%. I am generally very outgoing and I enjoy making a waiters day (or preferably a waitresses day) by being overly friendly or what not. I know the job has got to suck....that is why I never stiff any wait staff (well, I may have dined and ditched once or twice when I was in high school). Always leave 10%....just my opinion.

sportrider, if you were my waiter on Monday and gave us the same "great" service that guy gave us, then you too would have only gotten 6 for tip. normally it is 20% of the bill.

I generally tip very well 20-35% and sometimes more depending on how hot she is. But the other day at Red Robbin I left 10% and a little message concerning the trash on the bar and lack of service. again my.02

I tip well when it is deserved. Very well actually when combined with my soft spot for cute waitresses or bartenders.
