How do I get top-end off a 50?

Rebuilding my brother in laws old z50 and I just got the new cylinder and piston/rings in the mail, but I cant get the old top end off. I'm assuming its seized, and when I pull on it and tap the edges lightly I get no movement. I have everything unbolted, but the motor is still on the bike. I was thinking I may need to pull the motor so I can pull it up, but that doesnt seem neccesary. Any suggestions, never done a top end on a little bike.

That IS the correct method outlined by the manufacturer.

Well, it's the way I always do it...

What year is it? I'm about to try to rebuild my first dirtbike, ~78 z50, that's been sitting in my grandmother's barn for 20 years.
