Motorcycle Market Info

I am currently working on a Marketing project for my degree and was wanting some feedback from mh.

The market I am studying is "Motorcycle Owners" (the market most of us fall into).

What are some unmet needs that our market has?

ie. shops that are open late, easier access to parts

I think there needs to be a better way to inform other drivers how to look for riders. H town has some of the worst and best drivers.. With all the go green initiatives out there maybe more focus on riding a bike rather than a car.

Waiting areas for motorcyclist...not a break room but a comfy couch with a TV that is showing some kind of motorcycle show where we can sit and be comfortable when we are waiting for our bikes

Awareness of motorcycles would be pretty nice!

I like the awareness idea. Too many people just don't look for bikes or see them.

Are you trying to find something to market TO owners.... Or something you can just make a commercial for.. I mean making an awareness commercial I can see.. but may do you no good if your project is as if you were a shop owner or something. So in short.. more info please on your project.

Thanks for the responses so far

I am looking more from the perspective of a company and the needs of our segment.

I know a big one which some of yall have stated as well is convenient store hours (ie. Open Mondays and later).

Anything else you guys think you "need"?

The Triumph shop I bought my bike from is open on Mondays. Their solution is to schedule half of their guys for Monday, and alternate their on and off days ever week.

-I echo the Monday thing as well. I bought my Honda from Honda of Houston specifically because it was open on Monday when I made up my mind I wanted to buy. As it turns out, I got lucky and they had the color and the deal I wanted. Had they not, I still may have bought something anyway.

-To add to the above, stay open past 5-6pm. Even if you get off early, traffic usually dictates that we can't even get home until after 6pm anyway.

-Figure out some sort of system to test drive. Can you imagine not being able to test drive a car before buying one? I LOVE my CBR1000, but whose to say I wouldn't like a ZX-10R better. I don't know anyone that has one and I can't test drive one.

-If service areas had seating, I might be more likely to stay and spend money on accessories than dropping the bike off and leaving (Honda of Houston has no chairs in its service department).

-Lower profit margins slightly. More people would wear gear if it was cheaper, period. This doesn't, however, mean price can overcome ignorance

-Have a friendly return policy. Most stores don't keep much inventory on hand so jackets, gloves, etc are bought sight unseen and not fit-tested....only a magazine pic to go off of. If it comes in and doesn't fit or look right in person, don't make me pay a re-stocking fee or only give me a store credit instead of having the option of a full refund.

-Owner loyalty program. I totaled a bike and my helmet was shot. I keep my receipt for the HJC helmet and send it to them w/a pic or the actual helmet from the crash. They send me a $30 coupon to buy another one to save my life again. HJC saves my life once, I'd want them to save it again.

-Discount program: I own an AplineStars chest/spine protector and boots but my knee/shin guards are ICON. They should say, "well, he likes our stuff but we couldn't get him in a 3rd product." ....$5-$25 off a jacket, gloves, knee guards, etc. Get the rider completely branded.

-Stickers are the . Give people stickers when they buy something. I love the Sig Sauer sticker included w/my gun purchase and it's on the back window of my truck (free advertising). Aplinestars included one w/the chest protector. I have Scorpion gloves, helmet, and jacket. I obviously like their stuff....but guess what? No sticker...so no free advertising.

-Advertise on mass media channels...not just Speed network. You've got to spend money to make money. Motorcycles won't ever get closer to being a bit more mainstream if they advertise only to niche markets. Hire a big time athlete or celebrity as a spokesman. One of the reasons Harleys are so popular and have comparatively off the charts resale value has to do w/their advertising campaigns and branding. When I had my Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom cruiser, people would say "Kawasaki, so you got a crotch rocket?" I would say "no, it's a cruiser like a Harley-looking bike." And they'd be like "oh, ok!." Harley defines cruisers and motorcycles in general like Xerox did for copy machines a long time ago and Q-Tip did for cotton swabs. Do you ever say you need a "cotton swab" to clean your ears? No, you say you need a Q-Tip. You are referring to type of product by a single brand.

That's all I can think of for now. Hope it helps.

To be open Monday we would be asking them to be open 7 days. I wish shops would keep more in stock. It seems that everything these days has to be ordered. I understand they would have to keeps tons of parts in stock. I went to a shop for plugs a while back and they had 3. WTF is that? They said they could order them. I left and went home and ordered online with next day shipping.

Stickers and Open mondays. That would be awesome.

More parts in stock. I'm tired of having to order parts for every little thing.

It is illegal for a car or motorcycle dealership to be open on both Saturday and Sunday. Polaris West is open on Mondays.

I want a motorcycle dealership to carry a wide-range of apparel/parts and sell it at a decent price. In my 5 years of motorcycling and three new motorcycles (plus an atv), I have not purchased a single product from a dealership. I have had to buy everything online.
