whats appropriate battery voltage when idling and revving?

i think my buddy's bike testing at about 13 idle and 12.7 when being revved. is that about right?

12.5-13.2 at idle.
12.7-13.5 at 5000 rpm with high beams on.
Lots of things affect that reading from corroded cables to a low battery.
Why's he testing output? Has be been having problems?

I have the same problem. My batter charges at idle (13.3v) but my voltage at 5k RPM is around 12.4v and my battery eventually dies. Same thing though about the lights flicker and get dimmer when revved.

If's either a shorted battery or more likely a bad regulator/rectifier.

After HOURS of checking and rechecking everything i finally found my problem. The previous owner had spliced 2 of the wires off of the R/R(Red and BLACK) and they could not carry the voltage. Spliced in a new piece of thick wire for each and 13.6v at 5k RPM

Took her for a spin and everything is great now.

All wires were ran to it. But it looks like the previous owner had put a new connector on. But the piece of wire he used and the crimp looked fine but i replaced it and it made ALL the difference.

I also did all this after i had checked everything out(stator,R/R). Finally found it after using this

My problem was there was "more than 0.2v" between battery and plug.
But it can be any number of things.

well, with brights we got the bike to idle at 12.2-12.4 and to 12.9-13.2 at 5k rpm

ran fine, but left the bike on (not running) for literally one minute and the battery went dead...its a new battery, also when disconecting the positive while running it cut off after about 5 seconds.

almost sure its the stator though

I'm having similar problems with my 600RR, my headlights are flickering when the engine isn't idling. I did a voltage check on my battery and found that at 5K rpm my voltage comes up to 18.6 volts. Somethin tells me that my R/R is bad. Patrick, you may be seeing my bike soon.

(sry if it's off topic) but since you are talking about the battery, i have a battery that bought brand new from walmart and died 7months later. It's reading 7v instead of 12v, is it safe to charge? and if i charge it, will it last?
