If you are going to run from the cops...

... pick a vehicle you can operate.

Motorcycle stalls fleeing suspect

By ALEX BRANCH
STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

FORT WORTH - If you're going to flee the crime on a motorcycle, you'd better know how to start it.

Police tackled a shooting suspect Friday morning while he struggled to fire up the bike, seconds after he hijacked it from its owner, said Lt. Dean Sullivan, a police spokesman.

Keith Kimbriel, 42, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and robbery, Sullivan said.

The amount of his bail was unavailable Friday.

Police received a report of a shooting about 11 a.m. at an apartment in the 2700 block of Hemphill Street, Sullivan said. When they arrived, they found Gene Reason, 32, with gunshot wounds to his hand, arm and shoulder.

Reason told police that a man had kicked in his door and shot him, Sullivan said. Reason said he was able to knock the gun out of the shooter's hand.

Witnesses said the attacker ran out of the apartment, down an alley and into a convenience store, where he stole a beer, Sullivan said. He then went out onto Hemphill, stepped in front of a city bus and tried to get the driver to open the door.

The driver refused, Sullivan said.

The man then approached a motorcycle behind the bus and threatened to kill the driver if he didn't give him the bike, he said. The driver complied, putting down the kick stand and stepping off.

"The suspect apparently didn't know that some street bikes cannot be started without putting the kick stand up," Sullivan said. "So, when officers got there, he was still there trying to start the engine."

Reason's wounds were not considered life-threatening, Sullivan said.
