going from a big bike to a 250??

Has anyone done this for street riding? I've seen some of you that got 250's for the track but haven seen anyone go from a big bike to a 250 for the street. If anyone has does it just take a lot of getting used to? I want to track the Duc and get a 250 for commuting to work " hwy 6 and 288 tobush intercontinental". My friend let me try his 2010 250nija this weekend and I started having panic attacks going down 288 in the city cause the bike had no power. Seem like I was holding everyone up and I could pick up enough speed to pass anyone so I could switch lanes. To accel onto the hwy I was ringing its neck in every gear and still couldn't keep up with traffic.

Must be a crappy running 250 cuz I don't have any problem riding mine on the freeway. I can outrun most cars from stoplight to stoplight and cruise it at 90 mph all day long if I want.

The only change I made was to go 1 up on the front and 2 down on the rear sprockets. Yes, that is the opposite of what most people do with their sport bikes. Now 1st gear is actually useable and my wife and I can still ride double on it.

I weigh 245 and she is about 140.

Caligonetx rides a 250 daily. It's his only running bike right now. I'm pretty sure he can give you any information you want about it.

Its a newer bike dosent have barely any miles. Top speed was like 85 mph going down a bridge with the wind at my back. I'm a190lb guy so i shouldn't be that much of a strain

Then that bike is not running properly. I can do over 90 riding 2 up and over 100 riding single.

Sounds like that is plenty fast enough for commuting. I think I would have a problem downgrading on highways. If it was just downtown I think I would be fine. On the highway and beltway I like that little twist it takes to get into space.

agreed, the 250 has mediocre power at best, but yeah sounds like it's not properly tuned if it can't get much past 85.

I'd honestly recommend a 500 if ur worried about acceleration problems. my ninja is MORE than enough in commuting, and even with agreesive acceleration most of the time, my MPG is around 45 -50 , if that's important to u.

Cost wise, u can probably get a used one with a few thou. miles on it for under or close to $3,000. full covereage Ins. for me is only $350 a yr. too.

the styling is old and lame, but for just a commuter bike, it's been amazing for me.

I rode a 250 before the 600.

My only concern is the routine maintenance REQUIRED every 7k miles (more or less) as compared to 15-20k miles on bigger bikes. This could cost you an arm and a leg if you'll have professionals do it.

Speed wise, definitely faster than the average cage from stop to stop and what someone has already mentioned: no top end power (65 and up accel)

I dated a girl that had an 07 Ninja 250 and I loved riding it. I rode it over the RC whenever she would let me...put more miles on it than she did. The mpg and range was great. It was very comfy too. At the time I was around 240 and I had it to 95 riding 2 up, beat some cars from a stop 2 up, and had it to 105 with just me on it. It always seemed to have plenty of power to scoot down the highway and pass cars. I did miss the power of a big bike at times but still had a ton of fun on it. I'd like to have one of the new Ninja 250's.
