I think its the fact that its the most recognizable bike and Gixxer is the common word for sportbikes when dealing with ppl that dont ride

I get ppl all the time at work see me with my gear and ask me if I ride a "gixxer"

Its kinda like the word Coke...ppl ask you what kind of "coke" would u like?
Nah, a busa isn't a gsx-r, but I would have put it in the poll.

I think the most obvious recognizable name for a sportbike is "ninja."

Everybody always asked if I had a "ninja."

But the reason for the popularity lies in the domination of AMA racing from 2001 to 2006

yeah, ninja is fairly recognizable and people know it is a sportsbike.

But I cannot count how many times I have heard women "brag" about their bf and one of the top good things about about how "He rides a gixxer."

Out where I live gixxers aren't popular. Lots of Ninjas... and lots of wrecks. Groups go back and forth on the curves constantly out here. But there is one gixxer in town.

Yea but you are showing your age. That USED to be the squid bike. I have a VFR, quite clearly unique with the dual undertail exhaust and the single sided swingarm. I have been asked (with the big wing on the tank) if it was a gixxer, and I have been asked if it is a ducati.
