San Antonio hotels

Hey guys, need some assistance. Has anyone gone to San Antonio lately? If so, what hotel you stay in, and location? I plan on goin there for a lil family vacation, and trying to find a in-expensive/nice hotel near the riverwalk. Yeah, those two don't really mix, like an oxymoron. I've looked on hotwire, priceline, travelocity, and expedia, but it's hard to trust their rating systems. So, i'm here asking for personal experiences. Thanks dudes and dudettes.

The la quinta inn isn't too bad.. its new and clean. I think in the 110 range. Right across the street from the mall downtown. The rodeway inn 5 blocks away from the mall is cheap, but it is kinda sketchy.

Stayed at the Comfort Inn which used to be the old Bexar County jail. I liked it and my kids thought having bars on the windows was cool. Small hotel but very nice and reasonably cheap. Its located about 3 blocks from Market Square and probably the same distance to the Riverwalk.

Get what you pay for. I'm so old that I remember when the Motel 6 was $6 and the TV's were coin operated.

Whatever you do, don't stay in the Red Roof Inn close to downtown. The carpet was so dirty.

I found Goggle Earth usefull when we did our hunting for hotels, most of the ones on or say within 10 miles of the river walk were over 100.00 a night easy.
Goggle Earth gives ya the locations address, phone number, and name of the place. You can also see what all is around your hotel to make it that much easier for food, fun locations, etc. We also used it as our map on a laptop, just make sure you download the information and address before actually going.

Edit: Crown Plaza is nicer then and a great stay.
