coincidence?

Do you understand that people in their professional field will pay substantially more for real or unreal marginal benefits for their tools of trade? These marginal benefits are not always safety; it could include comfort, weight, field of vision, and yes, name brand.

Weight is a big factor for me.
A few extra ounces will feel like pounds when your whipping around a track all day.

I think that's the main difference between DOT/Snell cheap helmets and expensive helmets. Lighter, more expensive materials but not necessarily better crash protection

I bought my Collen Edwards Rx-7 from Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited for less then 400 when he did a group buy of a bunch of helmets a year ago.

That being said it's so noisy I don't ride with it unless I wear ear plugs ;(

Would I have a Suomy or Arai because it is lighter and provides less buffeting, abso--lutely. That's a great feature. But do I have the money, No. So I deal with my cheap helmet knowing it's just as safe as the big brand names.

That's all I was getting at. A helmet is a safety device first and foremost. Everything else is secondary. You can't argue about that.
totally agree man; just trying to point out that saying helmet brand X is the best because riders from this magazine wears them is recockulous..

Tried on Arai and Shoei RF-1100 without looking at prices. I picked the RF-1100 due to comfort, and it was cheaper to boot. Best advice I can give is go try them on in a store before you order online on sites like this one. Just because it is more expensive doesn't mean it will fit your melon better.

I read that entire article and am convinced that a DOT helmet is just as safe for the way I ride as a Snell/DOT helmet. I don't race, though - in that instance even the article hints at the Snell being safer.

It's all about preference. If you want an Arai, Suomy, etc, and don't have the money for them then save some. Don't take out a loan on a helmet. If you can't afford what you want, settle for something cheaper until you can save enough.

I'm not saying all Z1's are or all are good, just stating my personal experiences with them. And I spent no more then $60 on either of them from motorcyclecloseouts.com
