ah come on already it was an accident, what difference does it make that hes a cop? everybody acts like cops get a free ride all the time and never have to get their hands dirty.

I agree that this was an accident, but I do know (personally) of some cops that do get a free ride at least most of the time and even flaunt it to a degree. I believe that because of this, when an incident like this occurs people feel like it is a continuation of them getting away with everything. Just my opinion. I also think that the motorcyclist should have the right to sue (dont know if he can or not)

Cop hits motorcyclist and gets away with it....

I found this interesting. In short, a Austin police officer runs a stop sign while looking at his computer and hits a 74-year-old motorcyclist leaving him in critical condition and no disciplinary actions are taken towards the LEO. People are questioning how the law is written because while Austin DOES have a "no operating communications devices while driving" law, there is also a clause that allows emergency vehicle operators and law enforcement to be on communication devices while on duty.
where in either article does it say "cop gets away w/ it" both address the laws surrounding mobile devices while driving.....

+50 million. It was an accident. Let's stop and move on to a new subject.

Carry on

I bet he just wrote someone a ticket for running that stop sign, that he ran! he throws a u turn like he did cause his dash cam was still on. its not so much it was an accident. i see cops everyday that turn there lights on and go thru an intersection, turn them off and carry on, there not going to a call just dont wanna sit at a red light > those type of cops....

The next time I'm driving while on my laptop, run a stop sign, hit a cop on a bike and leave him in critical condition, I'm definitely gonna have to try using that first line as my defense.

Pretty sure I'll get off, too.

Yea, you go ahead and do that, and be sure to let us know how jail is. LOL

....It would be rather ironic if the cop that hit the motorcyclist becomes a motorcycle cop and then gets hit by someone else doing something similar.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean but, nobody is disputing that it's an accident.
It does seem like all too often cops DO get a free ride when they break a law. This story is a good example, he is not paying attention and causes serious harm to someone and doesn't even get a slap on the wrist.
We all know if an ordinary citizen were to do the same thing there would be to pay. The fact that the law says he can operate electronic devices while on duty should not be used to allow him to cause accidents while operating electronic devices.
It's like this, if I use a laptop while driving and a cop sees me he can give me a ticket, if I cause an accident at the same time I get more trouble.
The law allows him to use a laptop while driving, OK fine no ticket for him, but if he has an accident while doing so then he should have some repercussions also.

I did in fact find an article that states he was re instated to full duty without tickets or disciplinary action, so the cop gets a free ride for breaking the law that was not associated with an emergency(same as busting the intersection against the light for his do nut fix, or because the credit union was closing) cops believe that because the law exempts them during the emergency operation as to traffic laws they believe it exempts them all the time, and they sure as are not going to give another cop a ticket(unless the cop that breaks the law is a real to them), so yea free ride, free murder, same same

would you like to complain to Austin City Government? go here, there is a link to the city e-mail and a good letter the OP wrote and sent
