Coming from a seasoned professional with years of experience, if you want to make money (like the other guy said), bikes are a bad bad place to start. I'm an established automotive photographer and use over $5k of gear that I bring to the shoot (that doesn't include all the stuff I leave at home), and the majority of bike folks don't even want to spend $50 on a shoot. In fact, one guy got upset that I wasn't going to do it for free based on the fact that we had ridden together before.

Instead, I charge over a thousand for wedding/engagement photos and people don't even hesitate twice about it, and on top of that, it's less work as well. Automotive (or motorcycle) photography business is very very competitive. The ones that know what they're doing shoot for magazines that pay hundreds of dollars per feature. Their work is usually mediocre at best but they go to them because they're reliable and deliver consistent work. The ones that are left doing photography work for people off forums make pocket change and are wasting their time.

I've migrated away from automotive photography because several people don't see value in the images. The ones that do however end up hiring me and pay my asking price. Take it from me.. some pictures of motorcycles aren't going to add much to your portfolio. The tracks usually already have contracts w/certain photographers and people will usually just go to them after a TD bc they have their website bookmarked and don't expect anyone else to deliver images.

Just my 2 cents, but I do wish you good luck with whatever path you decide to take.

agreed....the pay in any form of automotive/transportation photography is pocket change compared to what you can make doing other forms of work. i gave up on that stuff long ago as well.

wedding photographers can make some serious money if your name is out there. I have a friend who pays her way through college very easily with weddings...

yup. if your work is even somewhat decent when it comes to wedding photography, you get all sorts of referrals just bc they see you as a reliable source. i'm making more through photo stuff right now than i am from my 40/hr week job lol.

haha a money shower would be nice. Right now shooting cars is my full time job but it's for a dealer so nothing exciting. A few weddings would be cool but that would get old I think. Right now I need to be shooting anything and everything though lol.
